#31DayReset Day 3: Write a Love Letter to Your Future Self

This post is Day 3 of the 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up here.

Yesterday, you took an honest assessment of your life. You probably had many “likes” to be grateful for, but also some “dislikes” that may have left you feeling a bit discouraged at this stage of the challenge. Today, you will be able to put those “dislikes” into perspective by writing a love letter. No, not to your romantic partner . . . to yourself. We all know that setting goals for yourself and writing them down is a great way to make sure you stay on track with living your ideal life, but what happens when you don’t have anyone to hold you accountable?

Estimated Time to Complete: 60 minutes

This two-part exercise requires you to write a love letter to your future self and then email it to yourself.

Step 1:

Write yourself an inspiring letter about how your life will be improved in the next 30 days. Use the outline below for your letter (or the worksheet in the Reset Workbook) or just freestyle your own!

Dear future [your name here],

Congrats on all the progress you’ve made so far! Now you have even more to be grateful for in each area of your life, including :

Lifestyle: You love . . .

Work: You love . . .

Education: You love . . .

Finances: You love . . .

Health: You love . . .

Family: You love . . .

Relationships: You love . . .

Your life is so much better now and it’s all because of your hard work.  Keep it up!

[your name here]

Step 2:

Next, type and paste your letter into futureme.org, a site that allows you to write a letter to be emailed to youself at a later date. Set your letter to be sent to you exactly 30 days (or more) from now!

Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your love letter with us in the comments! Also be sure to post it on the futureme.org site to be sent to yourself exactly 30 days from now as a reminder to check in on your progress after the challenge. If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

    Dear Angel,

Congratulations. You have finally taken the first steps to being happy rather than just going through the motions. The simple fact that you had the courage to admit that you weren’t happy and that you were determined to do something about it should be a celebration in itself. Many people are satisfied or think they deserve to stay in that state or don’t know who to get out it. But you took a stand for yourself and are finding ways to be happy with you internally rather than focusing on external happiness. For that I salute you!

In the next 30 days and even beyond I know you will continue to take steps towards your happiness. You’ve identified ways that you can improve and I know you will take the steps to turn those dislikes into loves. Stop stressing over money. God will and has always provided you with what you needed. You will learn how to budget and where your money goes so that you can save and spend smarter. In the end you will be able to have all that you need and more. That stress of numbers in your bank account won’t exist. You are having a tough time with your relationships. That is your biggest challenge. People who you once called friend have turned into strangers and it hurts. However, you will put yourself out there to make new friendships that will last until you leave this Earth. You won’t have to worry about who will support you because you will find people who will. It takes time to build relationships, remember that. But in the end you won’t feel lonely or sad for what you had or don’t have. You will start to celebrate the friends who have been with you no matter what and the relationships you are building with those that inspire you and lift you up rather than tear you down because they don’t understand you. All the fear, anger, hurt, bitterness, sadness, need for validation, depression, and any other negative feeling that you once had is leaving your body, mind, and spirit with each breath you take, with each passing day. Only in your mind will be thoughts that will uplift you and carry you through the day even when the load sometimes feels to heavy to bear.

In the end, it will get better. The sun is shining on you. This is one of the hardest things you have done but the great news is you did it and you will be even more wonderful because you took the stand to be happy. You are worthy to be loved and be happy. You deserve it. Trust me, the same love and happiness that you give out to the world will come back to you 100 fold.

So stand up, dance around, and celebrate. The life you always wanted is here and was here all along. Celebrate the fact that you took the steps to claim it.

All the love, peace, joy, and happiness!

    Angel

  2. Dearest Latishia,

Today is May 6, 2012 and you are sitting here playing catch up with the assignments of the 31 day challenge. It seems like you were always playing catch up, especially lately. But I am here to congratulate you because as you read this letter you have succeeded in your commitment to lay your procrastinating self to rest. You are using all of the passion you possess and not allowing it to lay by the way side. You have turned over a new leaf and should be so very proud.

In the last 30 days you have had structured time for yourself and completed tasks (finishing classes, registering for the GRE, writing your letter of intent, writing more blog posts, finishing your website, saving money for Paris, starting a fitness plan, starting treatment for your recent diagnoses, applying for that job, talking to your family more, doing more of what you want to do) that have been on the back burner for far too long.

I know this process has not been easy especially because you have so often felt guilty for wanting to do for yourself. But look at all you have accomplished. Look at your ability to be a better person, sister, daughter, friend, cousin, niece, grand daughter, disciple, partner all because you finally submitted to His will instead of doing what you thought to be right.

Well I am here to encourage you. Don’t stop now, you have come far but there is farther to go. Stay faithful, remember who and whose you are and never take your presence for granted again.

From the depths of my soul, love eternally,
    Latishia

  3. Dear Pinky,
You have accomplished so much in this life time that you should appreciate and value all that you have to offer. You were given a gift to care for and assist those who are do not understand the power of self love. Though you understand the power of self love you fail to love yourself the way you should be loved.
Take time to enjoy what you learn and expand your horizon without fear. You have faith therefore there is no room for fear. I love the fact that you have been able to take a step toward identifying your likes and dislikes and acting on them. You deserve all that this world has to offer. You have been given the opportunity to be a mother, a friend, a wife, a sister, a confidant, a supervisor, and a colleague; take what you have learned from all of this and expand……write your book, write your memoirs, write your children’s story for that group you call the “loss ones”, the tweenies. Be a voice for the voiceless. Continue to champion your future and not allow others to influence your decision.
Pinky, you are a loving person and can admit when you are wrong. Though some may not be receptive to this, it does not matter do what makes your heart content and grow. You can’t please everyone but don’t take on that mission….continue to pray, have faith, and humble yourself.

    I love you
    Regina Fields

  4. Dear Me,

I’m proud of you for actually doing this. The first time our conscious told you to do this 31 day reset you flaked out on Day 2 and the fact that you are writing this letter proves that you are closer to actually gaining control of the things most important to you.

You have began to do more than acknowledge the fact that you need to wake up at a decent time you are actually trying to do better. You are actually going all out and putting a bra on before you head into your office to do your work. You have been troubled by your lack of consistent routine since working from home and having your daughter and today you are finally in a position where you feel like what you do day to day is worth wile. That is so commendable.

Your work…ugh you still need some courage in this area. You want to master entrepreneurship but you are scared to snatch the rug off from under the comfortable lifestyle you and your family are used to. What you do doesn’t make you happy. You deserve to be working for you and you should be out exposing others to live with a purpose. I am confident that you can do it but you don’t want to right now so I can’t make you. All I ask is that you seek confirmation from God and make sure that your actions line up with His Will and Word.

You are happy with your educational attainments although you crave that experience that you want. You majored in advertising and after graduating you thought you made a mistake. However lately you have discovered that you are more creative than you give yourself for. Picking up that hobby of designing invitations on the side is a start. You go girl.

Finances…you talk to your husband more and you both are on the same page as far as our goals are concerned and getting out of debt is a priority. Keep your focus and continue to pray. God does provide.

You know over the past month or so you have been tripping. Your water intake has been slack and you have been eating all kinds of craziness but thank God for grace! You are getting back on track with your healthier living goals and you know that no matter what life throws at you it’s not an excuse to overindulge in cupcakes and soda. It just isn’t.

You love your family and you know that you have let some stuff slide. Continue to do what you are supposed to as a daughter, mother, wife and friend. Put life first. Relationships are important to you and I commend you for stepping out and nurturing your friendships and relationships this month. You have taken your daughter out more and you are showing more grace towards her. This was one of the hardest things for you and I’m so glad you are making changes.

Life is so much better now because you have taken the steps to realize what is important and what’s not. Great work and keep it up. You will be held accountable.

  5. Hey girl,

How are you doing? I know it’s all good. I see the changes in ya. I know you have been working hard for awhile now to live an authentic life. The hard work is showing. The daily meditating and yoga has changed your physical and mental health. Sticking to your spiritual path has given you the energy to look honestly at your work. You love helping others recognize their power. Writing three times a week on your blog has encouraged others to fully express themselves. And writing that new weight management booklet for the spa has helped your clients maintain long term weight loss.

I also noticed that you developed a debt management plan that will allow you to become financially independent.  The meditation and yoga have helped you become more aware of all of your purchases. And I can’t say enough about the 15 pounds you have lost. I see ya’ girl!!!! Just losing that amount has made your blood pressure normal again.

You had already made some job choices that allowed you to have more time with Terry and the kids. But you recently have been giving them your undivided attention. You are spending more time just being with the kids. Not worrying about the “to-do-list”. And having more energy means more FUN with Terry!!! Y’all have started going out on Friday date night. Your girls have enjoyed getting a call instead of text message. It has been so much fun catching up with them.

You are doing wonderful and I’m so proud of you. Keep moving forward the world will catch up!!!

    Luv ya,

    Vic

    • Love, love, love this letter Vickie! As I read it, I felt happy about all the positive changes that will soon be coming into your life. Terry’s, too! :)

      • Thanks so much!!!! I liked writing this letter. Just writing it helped shift my energy. It also keeps me accountable. I can’t deny what I said would happen. Thanks for this program :)

    Dear Tomisha,
For the last 30 days, you have endeavored to do and be Better. You have been blessed to learn so many things to equip and inspire you to be Happy, to be an Inspiration, to be a Blessing, and to be Love, because Love is everything. For the past 30 days, you have learned to Love yourself more.
You have loved others, your family, friends, and men. But now, it is your time. It is your time to Love yourself. Figure out who you are, what you want, and where you want to be. I am so happy that you are on this journey. You have taken such a long time to get here, but you made it. I know that all your dreams will come true. Just keep going. You are loved, and you are Love.

    Sincerely,
    Me

  7. So, i’m also playing catch up. I didn’t actually post my letter on my blog because just anybody could read it on there but I will post some tidbits here. It is a personal letter, so I won’t share everything but feel like since everyone here is working toward the same goal, it would help me and maybe someone else to share with you. Oh, and side note, I decided to not have the letter emailed to me in 30 days, but instead 1 year from now. I have a lot of stuff to work on.

Lifestyle: I see that you finally made the decision to get a passport and travel. Girl, have a ball. Live it up! And be young & fabulous. Get out of the house and have fun. Be spontaneous. Remember, you don’t have to compare yourself to anyone else anymore because you are…

Work: Continue to get that experience GIRL and that $$$. I know that you felt like event planning would be a gamble, but remember when you saw the finish product and the excitement on the client’s faces; you knew you could handle it.

Education: Either your about to start, continuing, or have recently finished an Event Planner Certification program. Good girl, remember, having a master’s degree in Event Management might be in the cards for you someday but it’s not a necessity right now.

Finances: If you slipped up here and there, it’s ok. Just jump back on the horse. Make sure that after paying all required bills, that you pay your student loans. Your focus now, is to maintain good credit.

Health: Continue to work out and stay as healthy as possible. How did you like Insanity and P90X? I know the latter kicked your butt! LOL, but you’re looking good.

Family: Spend more time with them.

Relationships: Open yourself up more! You are a great person so let people know that. Be yourself in your next relationship.

Lastly, just have fun. You are finally in a spot where you can have fun, so do it. Be happy!

Relationships: You love . . .that your friendship and acquaintance circles comprise diverse people. Having that diversity has both challenged and stretched, but it’s all been good. It’s made you expand your mind and heart to accept and embrace other perspectives….and you’ve grown tremendously because of it.

    Dear Eleanie,
Congrats on all of the progress you’ve made so far! Now you have even more to be grateful for in each area of your life.

Even though you are not where you want to be yet you are well on your way. I can feel it. Your lifestyle will improve because you are planning for such to happen.

Your 9 to 5 does not move you, but it pays the bills. You love the work that you are doing on your own time. That work is writing for the magazine and your blog.

I know that you are going to go a long way with your writing because you are doing what you love and you are working hard to make it happen. This may not happen immediately but, you will search for more opportunities to learn and soon the opportunities will be knocking at your door.

You will improve on your mental, spiritual and overall physical health. All are important and needed. You will work toward removing your debt and cleaning up bad finances, even if it takes baby steps.
You have admitted that you have to work on your relationships concerning your family. Please stop pulling away so much. As for relationships with others, please love you first. You can’t love others until this is done.

Your life is so much better now and it’s all because of your hard work. Keep it up!

    P.S.
I can’t wait for you to step out and start your interviews for the website. I am looking forward to seeing that beautiful and powerful project of yours touch lives.

  24. I missed the first 2 days but I’ll definitely follow the rest of the guidance here as I really new a plan to achieve my goal which is to get my ex boyfriend in the new year. Thanks for the posting!

  25. Will have the below letter emailed to me in 3 months time!! That way it will truly come as an unexpected surprise. I have also included some Do Now items for each area.

    Dear J. Kenn,
Congrats on all the progress you’ve made so far! You are working hard and deserve to be happy. You are making tremendous progress on your goals and passions. You have even more to be grateful for in each area of your life, including :

Lifestyle: You love keeping a clean and organized house. Make sure your keys are in their appropriate spot! (You don’t want to waste precious time looking for them.)
Work: You love the newly appointed responsibility and are grateful to have a job. Smile every day!
Education: You love learning new things including taking classes, learning from mentors, and attending workshops. Select a new class to start next month!
Finances: You love that you have finally started a solid plan for retirement savings. And, you’ve learned a little about stocks. Put some money away right now!
Health: You love that you have gotten out and gone for a run at least 3 x per week. If you haven’t gone out today, you better lace up those shoes!
Family: You love that your family is healthy and happy. You should give them a call today!
Relationships: You love the time you’re spending with the boyfriend. Tell him you love him.
Your life is so much better now and it’s all because of your hard work. Keep it up!

  26. I love the thought of this exercise however, i want to send future self a letter in 30 day increments, just to be accountable for my goal path.

  27. Todays assignment was really encouraging. Yesterday, in my effort to be honest, I struggled to find hope for my future. Today allowed me to actually visualize my future self; not just 30 days from now but so much further beyond that. This challenge is such a blessing because it allows for intentional, accountability for my own life. Change can happen but it starts with me changing my behavior and mindset.
