This post is Day 4 of the 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up here.
Yesterday, you wrote a magical love letter to yourself in anticipation of all the good things to come. You may have enjoyed writing it and hopefully you’re feeling pretty optimistic about the future. Another thing you may have realized though, albeit subconsciously, is that you may not be exactly living up to the values you have for your life.
Today’s exercise will force you to address that disconnect by doing the first task in developing a personal mission statement over the next three days: identifying your values. What matters most to you in life? The answer to this question is called your values. Often we find that we’ve forgotten about that which we care about because we allowed ourselves to get stuck doing something else, on someone else’s agenda.
Estimated Time to Complete: 30-60 minutes
Take at least 15 minutes to jot down a free-for-all list of all the things that means a lot to you in your life, all the things you care about. Feel free to take more time if you need it.
Just a few examples of values include:
- Achievement, fame, advancement, leadership
- Money, power, authority, economic security
- Having a family, children, love, community, friendships
- Nature, religion, public service, ecological awareness, healthy living, physical challenge
- Democracy, civic involvement, wisdom, integrity, truth
- Location, privacy, country, adventure, fast-paced living
(Remember, these are just examples. There are many more you can – and should – think of on your own. Most people come up with at least a dozen values once they get going.)
Your Reset 10
Once you identify all of your values – all the things you care about, choose your “Reset 10″ – a list of your TOP 10 values from your list. They don’t have to be in any particular order, though you may certainly rank them if you’d like.
(The worksheet for this exercise in the Reset Workbook may assist you.)
Tomorrow, we will move on to the next step in the process of developing a personal mission statement: envisioning your values in action.
Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your “Reset 10″ values with us in the comments! How did you feel as you completed this exercise? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

my reset 10 are reflect characteristics and/or beliefs i hold – those to imbue as part of what i do in life and how i serve (in alpha order) – authenticity, community (sense of, e.g., family, friends, neighborhood, etc.), curiosity, equity, foresight, forthright, imagination, love, self-awareness, and service. i found my choosing my reset 10 among the many not to be as simple as i thought it would be to pare down just to 10. nevertheless, i enjoyed the free-for-all time i spent jotting activities, characteristics, and ideas that matter to me (along with my theme song playing in the background!).

leaving a legacy is the one thing on your list that stands out to me. It is so important that we do that for our children, but also for our family and friends and the world. What is the legacy that you want to leave?

A lot of people say that they want to teach their children how to love God, but you go further. You want them to be mighty men who will impact the kingdom. This is important..and a huge responsibility, but I believe you can. God has equipped you with what you need to make that real.

coming up with the values wasn’t the hard part…the hard part was narrowing the list down the ten!
Humor was a good one! Forgot all about that.
Whew! This is harder than I thought that it would be. I might need more time or have to revisit this one, but then again I am a simple person.

I CANNOT believe how much I have forgotten about me in the past few years. Excuse me everyone but I’m a little outraged with me. I have been with my husband for almost 9 years(married 2) and I’m not blaming him for anything; today’s assignment made me realize how much I have traded me for us. And yes I do realize it is somewhat necessary in marriage. As my husband and I exit the honeymoon phase, I also realize that having my values are important. If I neglect my values for the sake of any other person, in the end, what will I have to offer me or anyone else: especially my daughter.
I’m so glad today’s assignment brought you some clarity. My experience has been that when I lose parts of myself for the sake of a romantic relationship, I begin to resent my partner, even though he didn’t “make” me give up anything.
Im glad u guys are talking about this, it made me realize that I may be doing the same thing. I definitely dont want to resent my bf especially since he isnt forcing anything on me. We just have to b true to ourselves no matter what.
