#31DayReset Day 7: Create a Life Map

This post is Day 7 of the 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up here.

Over the past few days, you’ve reflected about the current state of your life through assessing your values and actions. Today, you’ll get a chance to begin to go in-depth about your goals for each of the seven areas of your life identified in Day 2′s life assessment exercise. Today, you will create a life map.

But first, let me clarify what a life map is. A life map is essentially a visual/text representation of what your ideal life looks like. It’s really and truly one of the most powerful personal development tools for both envisioning and creating a “map” for the path to your own happiness.

Keep in mind that your life map should be in accordance with your values and your personal mission statement. The idea is that now that you’ve got a sense of where your life is, you can begin to think more clearly about where exactly you want it to go. Ready?

Estimated Time to Complete: 60-90 minutes

Please download the Life Mapping Workbook to assist you in creating your life map. It’s a 13-page easy-to-use PDF guide to creating your own life map with colorful worksheets like the one you see above. You will want to print it out and follow the instructions inside.

Just to give you an idea of the end point, here’s my completed life map in a visual.

  1. This by far has been my favorite exercise! I made a chart so that I can carry or post my life map around for motivation. I’m very detailed in everything I do so my life map is long. But I think that the one I am most excited about and need to work on the most is the relationship category.
    Here’s my relationship life map
    • Weekly or bi-weekly girls night out
    • Friends I can call to plan outings, talk to, etc.
    • Build a network of like minded, supportive, non-judgmental, loyal women who uplift rather than tear down
    • Supportive, affectionate, ambitious partner
    • Learn how to build and maintain relationships (both broken and just formed)
I think the biggest thing for me to remember as a God-Fearing person that my ideal life doesn’t come to fruition that it is because He is moving me towards his ideal life for me.

  2. This helped me to get motivated to be a better me. Seeing this all mapped out in front me I honestly think how fun, happy, and organized the person living this life will be!! I will share a few of my plans:

    LIFESTYLE
do something I’ve never done once a month

    • doesn’t it feel good to “see” a plan. This exercise is a good precurser to creating a vision board. Vision boards are a great way to see the goal and aim for it.

    • Great!! Seeing it all come together is a great feeling. Like you, I can’t wait to see how it all unfolds.

    • Janovia,

I enjoyed your post. Unfortunately, I was not able to get my life map on my page the way you did, but I enjoyed it just the same. Best of luck with your goals.
