This post is Day 9 of the 2012 edition of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up here.
After creating a life map the other day, now it’s time to take some action on those goals! It’s nice to take time to be dreamy and in your head (and we will do even more of that in the upcoming days of the challenge), but for you to really get reconnected to your dreams, you will need to start putting some real stuff out there in the universe. Like right now.
Today, you will do one thing to move yourself closer to your ideal life. We will be embarking on some more in-depth action planning later this month, but today’s exercise is meant to begin building some initial momentum for your journey.
Estimated Time to Complete: Varies
Today’s exercise is not related to your everyday to-do list. You are being asked to complete one task that is personally significant to you and your ideal life. This task should help you get started on a specific goal you’ve identified during the challenge, either from your life map or your personal mission statement. Your one thing should meet at least one of the following criteria:
- Something you’ve been procrastinating on for a long time
- Something that terrifies you
- Something that inspires you
The main requirement for this exercise is that the action you take must be tangible and measurable. Basically, if I were there with you looking over your shoulder, I would be able to see clearly with my own eyes that the task was completed.
Some examples to jog your imagination:
- You want to have better relationships with your family. Call that aunt you haven’t spoken to for three years. Buy a plane ticket to visit your brother.
- You want to go back to school. Research some programs online and call or email to request information packets from the ones you like the best.
- You want to own your own home. Sign up for a homeownership class or buy a book about how to begin the process.
- You want to be healthier. Throw out all the junk food from your cabinets. Then go grocery shopping today and only buy healthy foods. Or sign up for a gym membership.
- You want to save money. Open up a savings account. You can do that online now with most banks from your computer or phone. Then set up a recurring direct deposit from your checking account.
- You want to improve your credit. Obtain your current credit report. If you haven’t done it yet this year, you can get one for free here.
- You want to start your own business. Complete the necessary forms and register your business name with your state. Start a blog to promote yourself.
- You want to find a romantic partner. Approach someone you like or find attractive and ask for their phone number. Or sign up for an online dating service.

In my life map the biggest thing that I wanted to improve first is my relationships. That is the biggest thing that is lacking in my life and causing me great sadness.
I took 2 steps or 2 things to do in order to create, build, and repair relationships.
To Do Action 1: Signed up and RSVP’d for a group on Meetup.com based on an interest of mine. The group is having a Happy Hour on Friday and I am going to go.
To Do Action 2: I have had a lingering issues with a couple of close friends that I have avoided resolving and forgiving because I was hurt by the words and actions of these friends. I have started a letter to each one of the women to express how I feel as well as to take ownership for my parts in the conflict. I have put it off for long enough and know that I can truly say that I have forgiven once I let them know how I feel.
So when I read the assignment for today, I was really psyched and immediately knew what I needed to do but as the day went on, I found that there was another more important thing I needed to do. A work situation that has come up for this weekend has prompted to me make some changes that really should have been made a long time ago. I have given too much control of my life over to others in my work. In my quest to help others, I have neglected my own life a lot. So today, I set up some new business guidelines and developed a new system for handling scheduling and money. I sent out an email of changes to current clients and let them know that the changes are effective immediately. It felt great to do that!

For my one thing I actually decided to take on two areas, financial and educational. After making my life map I added as tasks that I would love to read more self help books, something with some actual substance and I would also like to take a look at my retirement contributions and adjust accordingly. I am choosing a book to read that will help me long term with some of my other decisions and I just changed my contribution amount for my 401K! Yay!
My one thing is organizing my financial info for my side business. It’s a little daunting, considering that I hate that part of it (even though I love making money lol), but I know it’s a major issue that I have to tackle to have the business and life I truly want.

The one thing I tarted with is my diet I returned to the diet that makes me feel the best. An 80/20 vegan raw diet. Most days I have drunk fresh made green juice until at least noon. My work pants have started to feel looser. I have definitely had a shift in mindset. I’ve have been energized. My mind has been on fire.
I also have being doing at least 10 min of meditating. Meditating grounds me.
YEAH, I’m caught UP!!! Ok, so today’s assignment was geared for me to only do one thing. Anything that would meet one of the following requirements listed by Ms. Rosetta:
• Something you’ve been procrastinating on for a long time
• Something that terrifies you
• Something that inspires you
So, I obviously chose to do something that I have been procrastinating on. Last week, one of my friends invited me to go to Zumba with her. And I was a big girl today, because I did IT! It hurt, my God, but it was a good hurt. I enjoyed it. And I’m actually going to the Wednesday class as well. So yeah, ME! I always complain about my lady lumps (I’m talking about my back fat and the fact that I personally think that I look like someone in their 2nd trimester). But friends, say that I over exaggerate. Any who, I am determined to finally complete this task of getting healthy. Both sides of my family have horri-bib-ble health histories. Honestly, I’m surprised that even found each other. I mean, how could two people with the worst family health histories on the planet think that they have the right not only produce one spawn, but TWO?! They should be ashamed. LOL!

Way to go La Toya!!!!
I recently realized that the reason I have been so unhappy in my life and in my work is that I have NOT been doing the 1 thing I have always wanted to do with my life: ACTING. I have been fearful of trying, fearful of what other people would think, and just plain Scared! So, for Day 9 Reset, I am doing something that terrifies me. I am taking a step towards my dreams! I am enrolling in an Acting Class! Yay Me!!
Day 9 Do One Thing blog post…
http://hittheresetbutton2012.wordpress.com/2012/04/09/do-one-thing/
My one small thing was to start blogging. I chose that because it’s something that terrifies me. I want to increase my web presence for my business so blogging is a step in the right direction. It wasn’ t as bad as i thought it was going to be. I actually enjoyed it. Now all i have to do is click publish.
Congrats, Egypt! I know it’s tough for many people to put themselves out there, but it’s so worth it as a tool to get the word out about your business. Go ahead & hit publish
I started blogging on a regular basis with this challenge. Frightening, yes. I am certainly terrified, but hard? Not really. It’s not hard to get it started; the hard part is staying committed.
Hey ladies, I’m still here! I’m behind a few days BUT I’m not quitting and I’m still doing the work! My “Do One Thing” was so incredibly easy….I ordered all three credit reports. Since one spoke on my life map is to be debt free in three years, my next “thing” is to see what I can realistically do in order to salvage my credit (and then DO it!). Thank you all for sharing your inspiring blog posts. You’ve each helped me in some small way. Keep up the good work!
Congrats on doing your one thing! It may seem small, but it sounds like a start to something BIG
Denise,
That is my next “one thing” to do.
Something I have been procrastinating about is scheduling a physical exam. I want to be healthy and maintain good health. I’ve also started taking my iron pills to combat my anemia.
I also want to be closer to my family and I’ve planned a family game night for the adults. I reached out to a cousin I was at odds with and my uncle who I haven’t been close with.

My one thing was a stated goal for this week and feel great that I actually took a step toward pursuing it! Here’s the link to my post: http://kiwisjoy.wordpress.com/2012/02/10/one-step-closer/

My one thing was going to be to do my revision on my blog and set it up the way I want to, but I realize that one thing that affects me being able to work on my blog is my time management.
So I’ve done some research on what can help me manage my time better, and I am making use of my planner. I am going to make a color coded schedule to keep me on track with important things. This system helped me when I was in college, so perhaps it will help me manage my crazy life as single mother with two little ones.
Time management is part of organization in my opinion and need my life to be super organized, because otherwise I feel clutterd and chaotic. So Time Management 101 here I go.
My one thing I did today was download your Complete Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Blog. I think I tried about three separate times last year to start one and I ended up giving up. So once I finish reading this, it is an ultimate priority of my mine to complete the task.
I too want to manage my time better. To do this, I have been planning ways to use my slow cooker, microwave, bread machine, and oven to get dinner ready while I am at work. Everything has a timer on it, and I work 5 minutes from home. I could easily start dinner on my lunch by setting up the bread machine, putting dishes in the microwave/oven and setting the timers to start them shortly before my family arrives. We could have fresh bread every day.

My one thing was researching graduate programs and requesting information. I found some programs I really liked and most of them don’t even require the GRE!

I was pretty much wondering all day what my “one thing” would be, then I started thinking about my previous tasks and I realized I needed to tackle my finances regardless of how intimidating they are.

I want to improve my time management: I wrote an agenda for the week and included all of the appointments and to do items for the week. I even included small things on the agenda such as call my friend, return the library book, and order the t-shirts.
Since doing the activity, I just found out that my photography class starts today!! Thank goodness I checked my ical or else I would have not known. I have also realized that there are things taking up my time that do not reflect what I value in life or my true self. I will need to prioritize those things that will bring happiness.
