This post is Day 23 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge for 2011. Learn more and sign up for the program here.
As Motivated Sista points out, sometimes it can be difficult to share our goals and dreams with our friends and family, especially if they’re negative people. They may not mean to intentionally dash our hopes, but it can happen quite often. In those cases, it may be useful for you to turn to other communities of mutual support to help you along in your journey to reach certain milestones in your life. Today, I encourage you to find a community to support your goals.
Estimated Time to Complete: 30-60 minutes
Today’s exercise requires you to explore different groups that you could join as part of your personal development journey. One thing you might do is to take a look at your Reset Project and think about what communities could support you in those specific goals.
Here are some examples of communities you might explore, depending on what area of your life you want to develop:
- Professional Associations
- Membership Organizations
- Places of Worship
- Meetup.com (type in a search topic related to your goal)
- LinkedIn Groups (type in a search topic related to your goal)
- Facebook Pages and Groups (type in a search topic related to your goal)
And here are some cool online networks that I’ve recently discovered:
The BOSS Network
The BOSS Network is a women empowerment alliance dedicated to highlighting women and creating opportunities for growth through networking beyond events. As a collective, The BOSS Network supports women initiatives in the journey to become independent and successful in their endeavors utilizing internet marketing. Working towards one simple goal BOSS® is “Bringing Out Successful Sisters ” to build relationships and networks to structure a foundation where women feel supported in their holistic lives. Membership is a one-time fee of $60.
Black Business Women Online
Black Business Women Online is an online network of almost 9,000 black women entrepreneurs. Once you become a member, you will have a great network of like-minded women who share ideas and resources about entrepreneurship, making money and marketing your business. Membership is a one-time fee of $45. Click here to join.
The Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss
The Black Girl’s Guide to Weight Loss Facebook Page is the Facebook community for the blog of the same name, a website devoted to sharing knowledge about the health of ALL women, while addressing concerns about our culture that affect the health of Black women. Always good info shared there, with a very active community of commenters sharing their own experiences and journeys.
SoulVegFolk
SoulVegFolk is the social network for Black folks who are vegans, vegetarians, fruitarians, raw foodists, etc. to share the joys, pains and crazy of their diet/lifestyle. From “newbies” to “veterans.” Membership is free.
Take Action and Reflect: When you’re done, please share your experience with us in the comments! Which community did you join? How will you stay active in it? If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

I decided to join a Polyglot Meetup group that will meet the day after tomorrow. Practicing and learning more Spanish will help me in my quest to go to Spain for extended travel soon. Plus, the members seem pretty nice and I’d love to meet people from all different cultures. I can’t wait to see how it goes!
I am definitely excited about joining the networking groups you have listed here. That will help with my goal of having my own business. I have joined an online community that is specific to persnality types. I feel like there are struggles I have in achieving goals because of my personality type- INFP. There aren’t many who can identify with me on much since we are only 1% of the population. Not very many people out there that understands me. So far I am liking it- I can very much identify with them and what they go through so I will keep it up.
I’ve already been in the process of doing this exercise to actually encourage myself to meet different types of people with commin goals and interests as myself. I’ve currently joined about 6 communities on Facebook or Meetup that have to do with fashion, blogging, going out and CEO projects. I plan to stay active in my core groups by attending at least one meetup a month, interact through forums and message boards, and keep a visibile presence.
Please, if anyone knows of any communities to help women in their late twenties improve my financial security, let me know! For now I am plugged into the Mint.com Facebook community. Here’s my blog about this challenge: http://wp.me/p1rrQZ-3P

Okay, first let me just say that I’m thankful I made it this far in the Reset Challenge! I’ve decided to make Health my project for the next 30 days; specifically, I want to work up to running one mile non-stop. I’d recently joined up with two fitness communities on Meetup that focus on fitness; I’ve e-mailed the organizers of one to ask if it could be posted that I’m looking for a partner to jog with me (I’m VERY new to the second community, and I don’t yet feel comfortable that anyone there would be interested). I’ve also posted an ad on Craigslist for a jogging partner, so…we’ll see!

I found that I am already in the process of building a network of support:
I am building a core of 4 or 5 really good friends (real friends and not associates)
I am a member of a professional association.
I am signed up with several affinity groups on facebook (and I will sign up with more).
I have a profile on sparkpeople.com (which I will begin using again once I’m done with the 31 day reset).
There are however more networking that I can do. So, as I go through my days, I will keep my eyes out for more opportunity to build the community that I need to flourish.
Love your building community keep up the GREAT work with the 31DayReset!!
