Happy Weekend: Eastern Market

I had quite the lovely email, Facebook and Twitter-free weekend. I cleaned house, listened to music, watched The Notebook (a fantastic love story, but be prepared to cry!), and bought fancy jewelry and fresh flowers at Eastern Market. I got the most beautiful purple tulips. It’s like there’s a little bit of spring in my apartment. I even talked to this guy I met online on the phone for two hours. I never even talked to the rocket scientist for that long on the phone. Weird. I don’t even know if I like him or if I just want to get used to talking to other men again.

Now I’m watching the sun set on this beautiful city. The best weekends for me are when I get out to explore it, which is exactly what I did today.

There’s just something about shopping at a market. Farmers markets, flea markets, open air markets, I love them all. For one thing, it’s much more fun than going to the grocery store or to the mall. It also feels like you’re part of an instant community, shopping with people from your neighborhood, talking to local folks about what’s going on in your city. There’s a neat kind of bonding that happens as you line up to get fresh fruits and veggies with a guy that lives only a few blocks away from you. My favorite market in DC is Eastern Market. They have an amazing variety of jewelry, art, clothing and antiques as well as farmers, butchers, florists, and a fantastic bakery on the premises. If you go, you must check out the Market Lunch, which serves up the best crabcake sandwich in the city, lunch counter style. For $8, it simply cannot be beat. You can also follow Eastern Market on Twitter to get the latest info.

  1. I LOVE shopping in open air & community markets. Theirs nothing like getting produce & other goods made & grown locally and its so good for the environment & community.

The DC Eastern Market is very nice. I visited it last summer & had a ball while shedding cash.

Great photos! You know I’m all about photos.
