Ever since I started Thurman Consulting, the services that have brought in the most money to my business have been speaking and consulting. Every month, I typically have at least one speaking engagement on my calendar as well as a recurring consulting client. But this month, I’m traveling around Europe – which means I have no speaking gigs on the books for over a month. Yikes!
Thankfully, my online presence allows me to earn money even while I’m on the road. In the past month, I’ve brought in an extra $1,000 despite not having any speaking opportunities. How am I earning extra money beyond my main income streams? My blogs! I have two blogs that I update regularly. On both sites, I offer resources, information and advice to help people live better lives (happyblackwoman.com) and become better leaders (rosettathurman.com).
I’ve been blogging for over five years. During that time, I’ve built an online brand that supports my work, developing a reputation as someone who has experience and expertise on several topics. Given my business model, however, it’s STILL been tough to maintain cash flow at times – especially when the speaking well runs dry. So here are two ways I earn money online to fill in those income gaps. They may be useful to you if you’re looking for ideas to bring in more cash for your business or just to make some extra moola for your travel fund!
Sell Ebooks on Your Blog
I’ve written two books, How to Become a Nonprofit Rockstar and 31 Days to Reset Your Life. Both are available electronically as ebooks have become so popular over the past few years that many customers prefer that format over printed books! Each month, I earn money from the sales of my ebooks.
How you can do this: Of course, you’ll have to write the book first. That’s the hardest part! Then offer it for sale on your blog. You can use Lulu.com, Createspace or go directly through the Kindle platform to self-publish your ebook. Make sure you commit to posting regularly on your blog so that people stay engaged with what you have to say. You can also use your blog to announce when you have a new ebook or when you’re offering a discount!
Place Advertisements on Your Blog
I waited for a while to get serious about putting ads on my blogs because it really doesn’t pay off unless you have a lot of traffic coming to your site. Blog advertising is when you place banners or text links on your site from a company and they pay you when your readers click on them. Now that my blogs receive consistent traffic, I am able to earn a decent amount of money every month just from advertising. What I’ve noticed is that the more I post on my blog, the more people keep coming back to read my sites, which increases my advertising income!
How you can do this: If you want to dip your toe in the world of blog advertising, the easiest program to start with is Adsense, a free Google program. It’s very easy for any blogger to sign up and there is no minimum traffic threshold. Once you have some consistently growing traffic, you can also get hooked up with a more specialized advertising network to serve ads on your blog. Two of the most popular advertising networks are Glam Media and BlogAds.
Are you using either of these methods as additional income streams for your business? What might be some others ways you can use your blog to garner financial support for your ideal life?
If you don’t have a blog yet, I highly recommend you download my FREE ebook, The Complete Beginner’s Guide to Starting a Blog. Geared toward newbie bloggers, this easy-to-read guide will take you from soup to nuts in terms of your blog concept, software, design, content, promotion and analytics. Longtime bloggers will also benefit from the marketing angle of the ebook which outlines how to build your personal brand online through blogging.
If you already have a blog (or just started one recently), see below for an opportunity to learn how you can take it to the next level!
The reason I created the Blogging School was to help bloggers build (or reinvent) their brands, create great content, generate traffic and monetize their expertise. It is set up as a 4-week online training where you will discover how to align your blog with your personal brand and use your blog to advance your career or promote your business. My hope is that others will be able to see the power that blogging can have on their lives, careers and businesses!
