You’ve gotta get Italian food at the Old Canteen Restaurant in Federal Hill. I was in Rhode Island for a business trip last month and the airport shuttle driver told me that the little neighborhood in Providence had better food than Little Italy in New York. I’ve always wanted to go to Little Italy (and Big Italy, too!), so that was reason enough for me to check it out. Then I asked my Facebook and Twitter friends where I should eat in Providence, and they all said “Federal Hill!” So the deal was sealed.
I had the “seven-course dinner” for $30, which was a steal. In DC, this meal would’ve run me three times that.
- Bread & butter
- Antipasto, fruit cup or tomato juice
- A choice of Minestrone or Soup del Giorno
- Your choice of entree
- Choice of 2 vegetables or a side of macaroni w/regular sauce
- After Dinner, a choice of ice cream or jello
- Coffee, tea or milk
I had the shrimp scampi fettuccine, which was delicious and not too salty. They had a great Riesling (my favorite wine ever ever) a fantastic chicken spinach soup, and strawberry jello. Jello! With whipped cream on top, which is really the only way to eat it. Anything else would be uncivilized. The restaurant’s pink walls, old pictures, and Frank Sinatra playing in the background made me feel like I was at my Italian grandmother’s house. If I was Italian. And my grandmother had a house. Anyway, it’s a great little place to grab dinner if you’re ever in Providence. They serve food with no frills in a down to earth atmosphere that makes you feel at home.
