Raise Your Hand if You Want to Be Average

“It’s never too late to be who you might have been.” –  George Eliot

No one ever said they wanted to be an “average Joe” when they were a kid. Chances are, when you were a kid, you wanted to be something interesting when you grew up like an artist or a poet or an astronaut or a teacher or a policeman or a doctor. You probably envisioned yourself changing the world and helping people.

And then life happened. You grew up and many of your childhood dreams flew out the window with age. You became more “realistic” with your goals and dreams. Or maybe you stopped dreaming altogether.

Maybe you became average.

Did you?

Did you forget about the things that made you feel most alive? The amazing rush of energy that came over you when you were writing or painting or making jewelry or helping people in some way? Did you allow yourself to push aside the possibility of living your dream life?

If so, it’s okay. Don’t beat yourself up about it.

Really.

It’s never too late to pursue the life you want. But if the life you want is radically different from the life you currently have, then you’re gonna have to make some changes.

I’m talking about real changes, though. Not the surface changes that just make it look like you’re really doing something.

Sure, you could go over to Amazon right now and buy a bunch of self-help books that you may never read. You could watch Oprah and get advice that you may never implement. You could even download the 31 Days to Reset Your Life workbook that you may never use.

Or you could stand up – right here, right now – and make a commitment to yourself to stop settling for average. And then do something about it. Something real.

That is true. Nobody is ever an “average Joe”. We’re bound for something out there, we just have to look for that and we shouldn’t procrastinate in looking for it. Your skills and talent make you more than just a normal or average person.

    • Yes, what many people don’t realize is that they already have a unique gift to give the world. We all have a purpose & if we just acknowledge it, we can then begin moving in a new direction.

  2. This is awesome because I think it’s always necessary for us to regularly stop and think about whether we are being the best “me” we could be. I know I do it often and challenge myself to take steps toward being who and where I want to be. Being average is not an option. Not for me at least.

    • I totally agree – important to check in with yourself periodically and ask whether you’re honestly living the life you want. Life moves so fast, seems like years can go by wasted if you don’t reflect.
