This post is Day 10 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up for the program here.
If you’ve seen the movie The Bucket List starring Morgan Freeman and Jack Nicholson, then you already know what this post is all about. If not, here’s a synopsis:
“Corporate billionaire Edward Cole and working class mechanic Carter Chambers have nothing in common except for their terminal illnesses. While sharing a hospital room together, they decide to leave it and do all the things they have ever wanted to do before they die according to their bucket list.”
Today, you’re going to make your own bucket list.
Day 10: Make a Bucket List
Imagine you’ve just been told you’re about to die in six months. Make a list of all the things you want to do, see or accomplish before you die. That’s it. Go.
When you’re done, please share your “bucket list” with us in the comments! (And yes, I’m still working on mine.)
Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

Definitely believe that which you stated. Your favorite reason seemed to be on the internet the simplest thing to be aware of. I say to you, I definitely get annoyed while people think about worries that they just do not know about. You managed to hit the nail upon the top and defined out the whole thing without having side-effects , people could take a signal. Will probably be back to get more. Thanks
Having read this article, I must say I’m rather confused. While the example of the tripadvisor widget might be likened to advertising your competitors hotel on your own site, some of the principles and reasons seem dated to me.
I’m grateful that I’ve done many of my bucket list items… though I’ll probably be thinking of more over the next few days or so. Here’s a sample, some of which fit practically in the 6-month window…
1)Go to Rome, Venice, Amsterdam, Prague, Versailles, Egypt, Athens, Paris (again), Vegas, San Francisco (again), Disneyworld, Grand Canyon, Niagara Falls, the Bahamas, Puerto Rico, DR (maybe), Cabos (in Mexico), Ireland and Scotland … and wherever else I can fit into the 6 months.
2) US Road trip (I stole that from someone else’s list
)
3) Trace my roots back to Africa and visit my ancestors’ home … and see as much of the Continent as I can, including South Africa.
4) Skydiving.
5) Fall in love with a man that (truly) loves me … and possibly get married.
6) Write a prize-winning book(s).
7) Star (lead) in an award-winning film(s).
9) Hell – open up my own club and DJ once a week!!!
10) Party with celebrities and rock stars.
11) Shopping spree – and dress to the “9″s all of my remaining days.
12) Have as many photo shoots and appear on as many magazine covers (Essence, Vogue, Ebony, In Style – you know, the classy ones) as possible.
13) Find the flattering (feminine, fly, versatile, edgy) natural I’ve been contemplating for some time. (My hair is technically natural, but it’s overprocessed at the moment from flat ironing every weekend.)
14) Spend as much time with family as possible and write letters to closest loved ones letting them know how much they mean to me.
15) …
Fun, fun, fun!

The only thing I can come up with right now is falling in love. (I feel like that’s so wrong)
Bravo Joan! I actually “love” your list. It’s obviously honest. Love may be on my long bucket list but it’s one of the things I want most.
I totally agree….I want nothing more than to fall in love…..
I gave up on having hopes and dreams a long ass time ago, back when i didn’t think i had a hope of achiving any (thanks to my AvPD). I am trying to turn that around now, but my hopes and dreams are still pretty minimal, if not non existant.
Ergo, my bucket list is very short.
Taking this literally, and going from the date i did this task (which was April 5th) I have until October 5th to do everything i ever wanted to do (or live out any hopes/dreams i may have).
Just one question – is it OK to do things you are going to be doing ANYWAY, or should it just be things that are not in the pipeline?
I am now going to just write exactly what i put in my blog for this task, so apologies for any repetition from what i have just written above.
Tuesday April 5th 2011
So apparently i have until october 5th this year to live out all the things i’ve ever wanted to do.
This plainly involves hopes and dreams. Trouble is, I don’t really have any. In that respect i am a blank canvas. I was hoping this project would help me rediscover some, or at least create new ones.
there’s only one thing i can honestly say i’ve always wanted to do and i’m doing it in August anyway and thats go to New York. And now i’m wondering if its ok to include things i’ll be doing anyway, or things that may be very recent (if its recent it can’t have been a long held dream).
Also, logistically, even if i could make such a list, what are the odds of me doing the things on it in 6 months? And yes, i know i am putting constraints on my own self. I guess i am jabbering to avoid the painful and shameful fact that there is no where i want to go, or anywhere i want to see, or anything i want to achieve.
I guess it just goes to highlight how culturally ignorant i am. After all, my wish to go to New York owes more to an obsession with its pop culture and iconic status than anything else, not to mention it was the setting of most of my favourite childhood TV shows, when everything was pure and innocnet and happy (yeah i know, only a freak could associate new york with pure innocent and happy lol) but hey, such was the lure of Sesame Street and The Cosby Show in stark contrast to my REAL life, among others.
I guess i could just remove the 6 month limitation and list all the things i’d like to do before i die, but i worry that that would be encroaching on the “write your own eulogy” task.
But i guess if i had to make a bucket list without the 6 month constraint i would say:
visit new york (doing it anyway)
live in my own place, at least for a short time
write a book
go on holiday with friends
Not much of a list(!)
Things I want to see:
- Spend at least one month in Jamaica each year; visit the Bob Marley mausoleum at Nine Miles)
- Visit Ethiopia (Addis Ababa, Lalibela, Shashemane, Axum)
- Visit Ghana villages where Adinkra textiles are made.
- Visit Russia (monasteries & churches, rural countryside areas)
- Visit the birth places of my grandparents.
Things I want to do:
- Write 2 books (one a novel, one a nonfiction book).
- Learn to play kalimba and djimbe well.
- Paint as many egg-tempera paintings as possible.
- Have a successful and enjoyable textile art business.
- Have friends whom I can visit and who visit me.
- Learn to live totally “in the present” without negative thoughts from the past nor fearful thoughts of the future.
So…I’m not really into bucket lists. Who likes to think about kicking a bucket anyway? As my grandmother lays intubated with doctors in a race against the clock and a tango with fate- I figured it’d be a great time for me to reflect on the precious gift of life. We never know how life will twist and turn, but there are a few things I know for sure. I want to live a bold, free, and authentic life. Outside of the day-to-day tasks, here are a few things I’d like to do in my season on Earth.
