Reset Your Life Day 12: Create a Vision Board

This post is Day 12 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life ChallengeLearn more and sign up for the program here.

Today, we’re going to get even more visual with our goals and dreams by creating a vision board. A vision board is a powerful visualization tool that you can create as inspiration for your journey toward your ideal life. Some people refer to it as a “dream board.” No matter what you call it, it’s basically a collage of pictures and quotes that serve to remind you of your passion and purpose. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be an artist to make one!

Day 12: Create a Vision Board

Today’s exercise will require you to assemble some art supplies. Note: This exercise will take about an hour. You’ll need:

  • a cork board, posterboard or small canvas
  • some magazines
  • markers or paint
  • some thumbtacks, pins, glue or tape

Step 1: Cut out images from magazines (or draw your own) that represent your ideal life narrative, your personal mission statement or simply inspire you.

Step 2: Paste or tack the images on your corkboard, posterboard or canvas.

Step 3: Use your markers or paint to write your personal mantra or other favorite quotes onto your vision board.

Step 4: If you like, frame your vision board and hang it on your wall. (Mine is up on the wall near my dining room table, facing me as I eat breakfast every morning!) Make sure you display your vision board somewhere you’ll see it everyday and be inspired!

An alternative: You can also create your vision board online with the O Dream Board program from Oprah.com. I haven’t used it yet myself, but it looks like a cool way to utilize technology to put together your vision board. Plus, it’s free!

Here’s my vision board. I made mine a while back and based it on my personal mission statement, but again, you can go with whatever inspires you the most.

When you’re done, please share a photo of your vision board in the comments! How did you feel as you were putting it together?

Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

  2. i can only describe my vision board i’m afraid as, even if i took a picture, i don’t know how i would upload it to here! lil help!?

Anyway, it is an A2 sized corkboard with a light wood frame.

I have chosen 4 life areas i want to work on for my vision board.

In the middle i have a “Become who you are” A4 sized laminated poster, as for me that is the entire point of this journey.

On the left, going down vertically is the area of health i want to work on. on that side i have pictures of good food i like to eat (“healthy” food conjures up too many negative connotations) a picture of a pair of skechers shape ups to remind me of and encourage my commitment to walking more. I’m not really about losing weight, i just want to be fitter and have more energy (definatly energy) so it was hard to decide what to put at the top. So i just put a picture of some cute joe browns outfits i’ll be able to look good in when i lose some weight, even though weight loss isn’t the specific goal.

On the right of the board, also going vertically, i have made a lil chart for my debts and savings. I have the debt part in red, which i can lower each month as my debt gets paid off. Another part of the chart is black, which will go up as i start to save. Also on the chart i have a picture of the badge of the school i work at with a big red “no smoking” style circle over it to indicate that my goal is to leave that job.

At the top is my spiritual goals (though goal is not really the right word) here i just have post its of spiritual sayins/ bible references and words of wisdom from spiritual leaders (my favourite is joyce meyer) that runs horizontally. This is to help me build and maintain my faith.

At the bottom horizontally i have my other motivational sayings on post its that are non spiritual based (eg from the daily love or inner visions) Also at the bottom in the middle i have another A4 laminated poster with a quote from Samual Becket: “ever tried? ever failed? Try again. Fail again. Fail better.”

I have it on my windowsill where i can see it every day (plus it is too damn big to miss!)

I have made my board interactive in that i can keep adding the spiritual/motivational post its and i can change the finances chart monthly, so it is constantly being added to and updated as i get further along my journey.

Something else i did to keep my lazy ass on track was to have a mini vision board. This is another corkboard that is a little smaller than A4 size. I have little heartshaped post its for that one in different colours. On it i have daily goals (pink post its with red puch pins) weekly goals (yeloow post its with yellow push pins) and monthly goals (green post its with green push pins). At the bottom i have things i enjoy (chosen from the 100 favourite things task) in orange post its with blue push pins. There is no time limit on those, its just to make sure that i am including things i like/love in my life on a regular basis. that hangs above my dressing table mirror, so again cannot miss it. And it is also constantly updated.

Though i think, for someone who has led such a lethargic “nothingy” life, having daily and weekly targets might be a bit much, so i might scale it back to monthly, then build up from there.

  3. I created a Dream Board using the “O Dream Board” on the Oprah website. It is a free service (nothing to buy and no fee to use the program). One can then save a photo of it to one’s computer and print it out. I enjoyed this exercise. I now have a nice graphic to remind me of my values and goals. Thanks.

  4. My quotes, pics, etc all ready…vision board incomplete. This task came on the day I vowed only to spend money for life needs. It was an unpaid furlough day for me, no money earned-none spent. I decided to stick to the spending freeze all weekend. Will post a pic when I have it all on the cork board (to be purchased).

  5. I’m 3 days behind on this exercise but I finally completed my vision board! I used an old painted canvas I had and some newspaper cutouts and even some custom drawings ;) I love it! It was a little painstaking, but at the same time I felt like I was doing something worthwhile that would bring me closer to my goals. I wish I had a pic, but my digital camera is broken :(

  7. This was a fun assignment! I will post a better pick this week but I took a mobile pick and just tweeted. Now that I’ve finished my vision board, everything seems even easier to achieve. Just have to maintain focus and stay out of my own way! (Twitter @Solstar5)

  8. Good Morning <3s!

I cannot wait to share my vision board with everyone. My plan is to have it completed by my birthday, December 27th.

    Have a great day!

  9. I posted my O Life Board to Twitter because I couldn’t figure out how to do it here. Sorry!

  10. I wrote out my ideas for my vision board. I have to wait until this upcoming weekend to actually build it and put it together…but I am excited! Pictures coming soon :)

  12. I actually did one a few years ago when I read “The Secret”for the most part everything is the same. There are somethings I need to change and/or add. One thing I learned from the many books, articles etc I’ve done is to make sure you include a picture of yourself. You should center it all around you; put yourself in the picture. So that’s the main thing I’m going to do with this new one- add a picture of me smiling brightly. Happy about my life!!
