Yes. After all of our lovely dreaming and visioning and imagining, today is the day we finally get down and dirty with developing an action plan for your success and happiness in the new year. Ready?

Day 20: Plan Your Reset Project

To complete this exercise, you will choose one specific area from your life map to make progress on within the next month. Of course, your reset project will be focused on one of these seven specific areas of your life:

  • Lifestyle
  • Work
  • Education
  • Finances
  • Health
  • Family
  • Relationships

How to Structure Your Reset Project

  • Brief description of the project: What area of your life map did you choose to work on? Be specific.
  • Why the project was selected: How will this project help you get closer to your ideal life?
  • Goals: What do you hope to achieve?
  • Results: How will you measure success?
  • Assistance/advice needed: What will you need to get your project completed or underway? How do you plan to get it?
  • Obstacles: What obstacles might you encounter and how do you plan to deal with them?
  • Next steps: What do you need to do now in order to see results within the next month?

When you’re done, please share your “reset project” description with us in the comments! Would also be great to hear how you felt as you completed this exercise. Did it excite you? Make you nervous?

Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

  1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF THE PROJECT: What area of your life map did you choose to work on? Be specific.
I chose to work on “Health”, specifically to exercise more, even more specifically, to start walking. I want to feel fitter and have more energy. I can get more done if I have more energy.

WHY THE PROJECT WAS SELECTED: How will this project help you get closer to your ideal life?
I want to feel fitter and have more energy. I can get more done if I have more energy (eg piano practice, reading, working on my tuition company).

GOALS: What do you hope to achieve?
I want to feel fitter and have more energy. I want to lose the feelings of tiredness and lethargy that come of doing nothing.

RESULTS: How will you measure success?
By how much more energy I have to do things in the evening, how quickly I can walk to work (currantly 12 minutes), how much further I can walk in my given time (starting with 30 minutes a minimum of 3 times a week builing up to an hour 3-5 times a week).

ASSISTANCE/ADVICE NEEDED: What will you need to get your project completed or underway? How do you plan to get it?
I will get Skechers Shape Ups to maximise the benefits of walking. I MAY get a pedometre, but I don’t really need one.

OBSTACLES: What obstacles might you enconter and how do you plan to deal with them?
My own laziness at first! I need to a) build a routine that allows 30-60 minutes of walking a day b) make sure i vary my routes so i don’t get bored of it (and to confound stalkers lol) and c) go straight from work. DO NOT SIT DOWN!

NEXT STEPS: What do you need to do NOW in order to see results within the next month?
I will start next Monday at about 4.30pm. I will start with half an hour (15 minutes in one of my chosen directions and back again)every other day. Within a month I (hope) I will have increased my walking time to either 1 hour three times a week or 30 minutes 5 days a week.

  2. This was the best exercise for me thus far, as it forced me to focus, to be honest with myself, and to make a concrete plan (rather than just muddling along as I had been doing for several months.)

•Brief description of the project: What area of your life map did you choose to work on? Be specific.
I will be working on the “Work” area of my life map. Specifically, I will take steps to further my plans to become a textile design entrepreneur.

•Why the project was selected: How will this project help you get closer to your ideal life?
This is the essential area of my life that is currently lacking. My previous employment was terminated. I was a grant-writer/fund-raiser at a non-profit agency that had to restructure due to the recession. Its fund-raising department was eliminated; (their thinking, whether correct or incorrect, was that since government funding has been scaled back, the writing of grant applications would be a futile endeavor.) My first strategy was to seek new full-time employment, but after a year of not finding a job, I decided to become semi-retired (i.e. to collect my pension) since I am 63 years old. However, the amount of retirement income is insufficient for a comfortable life-style. Although my art interests would keep me contentedly busy if I were fully retired, the art and photography I had done in the past was not income-generating (i.e. it was a hobby.) Since I need additional income and since my “passion” is art, I have decided to combine the two, to create a totally new career.

•Goals: What do you hope to achieve?
My goal is to establish a textile design business that will consist of design and production of one-of-a-kind fabric and women’s clothing made from it, as well as T-shirts that have smaller versions of the designs. I also make crocheted hats/tams, scarves, and purses. I hope to sell these items through an online website. To supplement sales, I will also do alterations (for local clients.)

•Results: How will you measure success?
Success will be measured by profitability (income from sales minus cost of supplies, production, website, and advertising).

•Assistance/advice needed: What will you need to get your project completed or underway? How do you plan to get it?
I have already begun sample production. I have also created a logo and business cards, and have registered the name of my business with the state where I live. I need a website (and know someone who designs websites). But first I need to produce more sample items and to photograph the sample items, in order to advertise them on a website. Just yesterday, I purchased a good digital camera to do the photography, which I can do myself since one of my college degrees is in photography and media.

•Obstacles: What obstacles might you encounter and how do you plan to deal with them?
My major obstacle is my own scheduling of time, as I am involved with too many extraneous pursuits, including volunteer work that I have been doing for years, as well as taking care of an elderly aunt and the tending of a huge garden during summer months. Although I must care for my aunt and I need the garden and have always found time for it while I was working full-time, what I must do is to scale back on the other outside activities and concentrate on activities related to the business. This will be a challenge.

•Next steps: What do you need to do now in order to see results within the next month?
I have discovered that even for a retired person, there are still only so many hours in a day and if one wastes time, not everything gets done. I need to develop greater self-discipline in regard to scheduling my time and maintain focus on the primary goal of getting the business up and running.

  3. My reset project will be “work”.
I selected this project because working at my current workplace is very de-motivating, I have been there for nearly 2 ½ years and that was never the plan. I have allowed fear to stop me from pursuing my dreams. I believe that once I have made the move, it will affect the other areas of my life positively, especially my finances. I will measure success by actually being at the new job in my field.
I’m currently working on an action plan that will help me to make the move. I would like to be in my new job by July 2011.

  4. ‘get my health in check’ I’m currently working on physical issues and looking to getting the mind at the same level. I need to work on the whole package this way I can be completely focused.

‘money for me when I’m debt free’. By this time next year if I stick to budget I will be debt free leaving more cash for saving for the nest egg and travel.

  8. I choose the “Family” area of my life map. There are several things that I want to start doing from this section and am able to start doing now. I specifically choose the “Visit my hometown at least once per year” and the “Check-in with my family/friends at least bi-weekly, be it in person, online, Skype, telephone, etc.” points on my map.

  9. I’m so late but I decided to work on relationships. I plan to date and go out more. I have more free tine and cab do more stuff. I’m not looking for a husband just a companion to spend time with every once in awhile. Nothing serious just dating…I guess you can call it “Operation Boyfriend ” so Day 18 came right on time. If I lose interest in this I will take on Work (but because I work on that a lot now, don’t want to make it my focus).

  11. Am focusing on three things for my reset project day 20 that is work, health and relationship.

I am putting in more hours in ,my design business, have increased the cost of m services, the goal being a self sustaining business leading to a larger bank balance after my expenses are handled Yay! Foreseen obstacle is clients wanting a cheaper deal..and being tired from regular job at times to concentrate on my hustle

Health wise am a little behind on the exercise..mainly 40 minutes walks, purchasing dumbbells this weekend to work on those Michele O arms :-) How ever have managed to keep to a health diet restricting refined carbs, eating lean protein and my daily dose of fresh fruits..highlight of my day really. (One thing why i appreciate living in the tropics..fresh cheap fruit). I am using the scale and measurement to determine my progress..the challenge i see is..what to eat at a party and keeping away from chocolate.

Relationship wise am sill reaching out to friends and family, foreseen obstacle being, getting voice mail,. Any how sending a care package to BF some thing to keep the connection considering the distance..trying to make the holiday bearable for one of us…

I selected the three because these are a work in progress and the earlier i start on them the better

  12. Hello Ladies!

The area of my life map that I choose to work on is Work, specifically photography. Pursuing photography will help me get closer to my ideal life because it will allow me to focus on something that I’m passionate about. I want to use photography as a way to increase my finances and to have fun, fun, fun. I will measure success by my happiness first and extra income second. In order to get my foot in the door of the world of photography, I need to take some classes and network with some established photographers. I am taking a class in 2011 and I have a professional photographer already to guide me. The one obstacle that I anticipate having is building clientele when the time comes. That’s when patience will have to be a virtue. In order to see results within the next month, I need to start learning techniques and practicing. Can’t wait to start class!

  13. I’m excited about resetting my life! Not sure about anyone else, but this was the most overwhelming process of them all. Rosetta, I know you said to focus on ONE area of our lives, but in trying to decide which area to focus on, it reminded me of how much I wanted to accomplish overall. Although I should probably focus on my most desired goal, I chose to work on my health as well. I want to lose a few pounds as well as eliminate some of the stress that I experience from worrying. In order to achieve that, I plan to either obtain a memebership at a gym or invest in a Zumba class package. I’m leaning towards the Zumba package. I’m actually attending my first Zumba class tonight. I have also left a message with my therapist so that I can schedule a monthly appointment for the entire year. I want to make visiting her consistent. Just waiting on her to call me back. I know that working out will help me lose the weight, which in turn, I will be more confident and more positive. Having my therapy sessions will enable me to think clearer and not focus on the things that don’t matter; allowing me to feel better about achieving the goals in the other areas of my life. Good luck to everyone! Thanks Rosetta.

    • Hope you enjoy your Zumba class. I LOVE Zumba but it may be worth investing in some DVDs or a basic gym membership just to keep some variety in your routine. Good Luck!

      • Thanks for the advice. I actually met with a guy at the gym yesterday (since Zumba class was cancelled.) I received a week free of gym services and will be entering into my contract at the beginning of the year! So, I”m back on the right path!. THANKS

    • Congrats on making progress on your reset project right away! My mom is a personal trainer and she says having a therapist to talk to through your weight loss journey can be very beneficial.
