Reset Your Life Day 3: Identify Your Values

This post is Day 3 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life ChallengeLearn more and sign up for the program here.

Yesterday, you conducted a life assessment to look at what was working – and not working – in the seven key areas of your life. You took an honest look at where you felt accomplished and where you found yourself lacking. I have to admit, I teared up reading many of your assessments and I dug deep in completing my own as well.

Why? Because so many of us listed more “hates” than we expected and revealed that we really do need a major change in our lives. For most of us, yesterday was the first step in realizing that we are not living up to our personal values. Today, we’re going to address that disconnect by doing the first task in developing a personal mission statement over the next few days: identifying your values.

Day 3: Identify Your Values

What matters most to you in life? The answer to this question is called your values. Often we find that we’ve forgotten about that which we care about because we allowed ourselves to get stuck doing something else, on someone else’s agenda. Take at least  15 minutes to jot down a free-for-all list of what means a lot to you.

Just a few examples of values include:

  • Achievement, fame, advancement, leadership
  • Money, power, authority, economic security
  • Having a family, children, love, community, friendships
  • Nature, religion, public service, ecological awareness, healthy living, physical challenge
  • Democracy, civic involvement, wisdom, integrity, truth
  • Location, privacy, country, adventure, fast-paced living

Remember, these are just examples. There are many more you can – and should – think of on your own. Most people come up with at least a dozen values once they get going. Once you identify all of your values – all the things you care about, choose your “Reset 10″ – a list of your TOP 10 values from your list. They don’t have to be in any particular order, though you may certainly rank them if you’d like.

When you’re done, please share your “Reset 10″ values with us in the comments! Would also be great to hear about the process went for you and how you felt as you completed this exercise.

Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

People pleasing was an issue I had a long time to ago, but sometimes it creeps back in. I have to remind myself I am doing this for me.

I named ten values easily. In about 2 minutes. Then others came to mind later, but I felt like each one of those would fall under one of the top ten values.

    4. Helping Others
    5. Financial Stability/Security

    Laughter
    Comfort
    Freedom/independance
    Having a purpose/Making a difference
    Economic security
    Fun/entertainment
Living the healthiest lifestyle that I possibly can.

  6. I must say that I look forward to these exercises.

    My values:

    love and passion
    family
    career progression
    leading with intuition
    being a positive inspiration
    spirituality
    drive and ambition
    search for knowledge and truth
    adventure and cultural penetration
    health Positivity and FUN!

  7. My Reset 10 (Plus 1!)

    1. Honoring God & growing spiritually.
    2. Realizing my Personal Legend
    3. Health in my physical body, mind & spirit
    4. Family (children, motherhood, building & adding to a family legacy)
    5. LOVE (strong & happy marriage, affection, friendships, family)
    6. Financial freedom & security
    7. Sincerity & Beauty
    8. Nature (I breathe it. I need it)
    9. Liberating, exchanging & sharing with others
    10. Travel & Culture
Plus One: Good Food! it gives me SOOOO much joy!

  8. These are not in order . . .
Economic security for myself and my family
    To help others
To become adventuresome, like I use to be
Form a better relationship with my son
    Health
    Express my creativity
    To make a difference
Being me, my authentic self at all times
    To become more spiritual
    Family

  9. I didn’t put them in order but here they go:

Friendship- I value friendship although I don’t have many friends. I don’t have that just best buddy that I have to tell everything to, who knows everything about me and I know everything about her. But I wish I did.

Health- I value health (and here I go again) although I’m not taking real good care of myself so I can get a good return on my investment in my old age. I should be exercising and taking care of myself.

Family- Family means a lot to me. I’m not close to my family; in fact I hardly even know the majority of my family. I think that might be why I have spent so much of my life trying to fit into other peoples families because I didn’t have that but I really wanted it. But you never really forget that they are not really your family I always still seem to feel like an outsider.

Employment- I value employment so much more now that I’m unemployed. While I was working I took it for granted that I was blessed to be on a job for seventeen years.

Happiness- When you’ve been unhappy for so long you look back and value the times when you were.

Education- I value education. I am soooo glad to be going back to school to better myself, learn new things, and just open my eyes to what life really has to offer.

Faith- I value Faith simply for the reason He didn’t have to do it but He did and He did it for little ole me! ;)

    Love- true love is priceless

Honesty- I am worth the truth and I deserve to be told the truth no matter how hard it might be to swallow.

Freedom- I value my freedom. I thank God I am free. Free to be me. Free to live my life as I so please. Go where I want to go. Read what I want to read. Watch what I want to watch.

  10. top 10

    10)Physical challenge
    9) Healthy living
    8) Loyalty
    7) Economic security
    6) Common sense
    5) wisdom
    4) self discipline/personal responsibility
    3) sincerity
    2) fairness/justice
    1) Privacy

i found this quite difficult as i have honeslty never sat down adn really thought about what my values are before. I interpret values as the things i hold dear that i live by. the problem is, i “live” them without really thinking about the fact that they are important to me, or how important they are. “friendship” was a value that i struggled with, and at one point had it at numbers 8 then 7. But i had to ask myself – how much can i really “value” something that i don’t have and am making no effort to aspire to? (at the time). So i found it quite difficult to acknowledge and admit that there was a value i SHOULD find important and have in my list, but didn’t feel i could because i did not “live” it. So friendship is there, just not in the top 10. though i hope to be changing that this saturday, having started my own meet up group.
I actually ran through many drafts of this before i came up with this top 10. And now there is a value i would actually add, but it came about right at the end of the project, so i will “blog” about it on day 31. But that value is FORTITUDE, and if it were possible to have a number higher than 1) it would be there! (or i could just bunk “physical challenge” and move the list down lol)

  11. In no particular order my Reset 10:

    Empathy
    Love
    Trust/Honesty
    Spiritual Education/Teaching
    Accountability
    Authenticity
    Spiritual Foundation/Practice
    Play/Fun
    Creativity
    Family

  12. This was a wonderful exercise, as it required honest reflection. I had done this sort of thing a long time ago, and as I did it again now, I was surprised how some of my values had changed, while others remained steadfastly the same. My list, and the reasons I strive to live these values:

    * Healthful Living (one needs good health in order to pursue the other values to their full potential)

    * Integrity (honesty with oneself and others about actualizing all one’s values in one’s daily interactions with people and the world)

    * Truth (to seek truth in all things and not be afraid to face any truths that might be unpleasant or the acceptance of which might require a shift in thinking)

    * Friendships (one is not in the world alone; the inter-relatedness of one to one is what gives life its meaning as we both learn from and teach one another from our experiences)

    * Family (the older one gets, the more one learns to appreciate one’s family, especially after the generation older than you have all passed on)

    * Economic Security (it is unpleasant, to put it mildly, to have to worry whether one will be able to afford to pay the bills each month)

    * Intellectual Stimulation (one must pursue learning new things throughout one’s life, as circumstances and the world are constantly changing; the more one knows, the better one is equipped to deal with whatever changes occur)

    * Community (“it takes a village” not only to raise a child but to live a fulfilled life, no matter what age one is at; one must realize that a “healthy community” is one in which people seek to be connected in ways that uplift one another)

    * God/Religion (inner strength and hope come from having faith)

    * Nature/Ecology (we have only one earth, the resources of which must be sustainable for our survival and the survival of future generations)

  13. Here is my list of ten values not in any particular order:

    Relationships (Family, friends and partner)
    Having a family
    Making a positive difference
    Kindness
    Respect
    Honesty
    Laughter
    Time with myself

Goof thing we have a “reset 10″. I basically wrote what makes me feel good. 67. Spending time today catching up on assignments. It’s hard to do the values thing, because I do my best to live these principles instead of merely speaking about them. Here are mine:
    • Incorporating travel into my life on a much more regular basis
    • Continually pushing myself to be more vulnerable, engaged, and impressive in the expression of my artistic vision
    • Finding a balance between introspection and meditation and the diligent pursuit of meaningful employment
    • Finding more ways to contribute to the spiritual health & growth of my community
    • Honoring my role as a cultural preserver through all of the means available and of interest to me
    • Having as much fun as respect, maturity and physical passion in my romantic relationships
    • Counting my joy every day with affirmations or words of gratitude
    • Being boldly smart and refusing to dim my light because of other people’s issues
    • Taking more time and care in expressing my outward beauty
    • Listening more, talking less, observing, being intuitive and acting with purpose

    • I loved that you were very detailed in your list. I went that same route and because of that, the other tasks have been much easier.

    • -Counting my joy every day with affirmations or words of gratitude

I really enjoyed reading your values list. Loved how detailed you were as well. I pulled this one out because I do this too and it helps bring my focus to the positive rather than dwelling on the negative.

  68. Faith – Building a stronger foundation in my faith walk and serving more in my church
Volunteering- Via community and public service
    Activism
    Travel
Relationships- building stronger bonds with my family and friends
Financial Peace & Comfort – living within my means
Healthy living- maintaining good health while living with chronic illness
    Integrity/Responsibility
    Compassion/Love
    Success

    6. Loyalty
    7. Honesty
    8. Wisdom
    9. Achievement
    10. Courage

  80. For some reason I found this to be a difficult exercise…but here goes my list in no particular order (except for #1 because I think that helps everything else to fall in place):

    1. Living a Christ centered life
    2. Peace
    3. Financial Security
    4. Motherhood (being a good Mother)
    5. Self-love/empowerment
    6. Family
    7. Success
    8. Education
    9. Helping others (both financially and with my time)
    10. Healthy Lifestyle

  81. Hola Ladies,
    1.) Family
    2.) Healthy Relationships
    3.) Honesty
    4.) Healthy Lifestyle
    5.) Financial Stability
    6.) Contentment
    7.) Self-Awareness
    8.) Learning
    9.) Personal Appearance
    10.) Compassion

  82. I enjoyed this activity. It was easy to identify what I value in life. Difficulty was choosing which 10 to share. I thought of all the ideals I hold in high esteem in my life.

    Reset 10
Family (marriage, husband, children though I don’t have this yet)
Family (parents, siblings, extended family, and friends)
    Love
    Legacy
    Creativity
    Balance
    Self Awareness
    Human Connectivity
    Stability
Sunshine (my personality, happiness, how I want my life to be…a big ball of sunshine. Hot, vibrant, warm, golden sunshine…)

  83. This was pretty easy for me. I developed a personal mission statement years ago when I read 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. I just took my values I used when I wrote that.
    I value….
    Success
being able to help others including my friends/ family
    Continuous education and learning
    Ability to travel
    Financial stability
    Happiness/joy

    Stable relationship

  84. I value the following:
    integrity
    following one’s intuition
    economic independence
doing what you love for a living
having the courage to leave unhealthy/unhappy situations
    giving and receiving love
    intelligence
    common sense
    travel

  85. Things I value…
    1. A job that offers me the flexibility to come and go as I please.
    2. Living in a climate that allows me to buy a light Winter coat and affords me the opportunity to visit the beach in December.
    3. Living a life of service to God and my fellow man.
    4. Religious freedom and my walk with Christ that will end someday in Heaven.
    5. Being financially free; not owing anyone anything. Being able to live very comfortably, while always preparing for rainy days.
    6. My family and friends. Maintaining healthy relationships with each and every one of them.
    7. Having a home that my loved ones (husband and children one day) feel welcome in.
    8. Educational freedom. Being able to attend any school I want, studying anything I want.
    9. Good health. Being on the opposite end, I know what it feels like to not know if tomorrow will come.
    10. The hope of a husband that reminds me how Christ loves His bride (the church) and children to remind me of God’s love for His Son.

It was kind of hard to narrow down this list, but here it is. I tried to think about things that are important to be now at 25 and should be important to me at 55. I want to consistently make right choices so that I can live a full, joyous life.

My blog entry is here: http://keikokaveri.tumblr.com/post/2084593523/day-3-identify-your-values

  86. im happy that this was very easy for me. my values (in no particular order) are as follows:

    positivity/goodness
    honesty
    openness
    learning
    joy
    respect
    beauty
    relationships (family/friendship & otherwise)

  87. So I did this before I read the comments, and I’m glad I did, because I didn’t want to be influenced by other ppl’s lists. I’m seeing that I didn’t list things that others did, like financial security, tho one could argue that things I did list (intelligence & hard-work/hustle) can get you financial security. Great exercise.

    My list is
    Intelligence
    Loyalty
    Trustworthy
    Responsibility
    Personal Freedom
    Hardwork/hustle
    Beauty
    Wisdom
    Joy/Happiness
    Creativity

  88. This exercised helped me to better understand what I really value and narrow down my focus of what is important to me. It was a little difficult because as you grow through life your values change and some things are not as important to you anymore.

    My Reset 10 values are:
    1.Healthy Living
    2.Success/Achievement
    3.Relationships w/ family and friends
    4.Faith
    5.Personal Growth
    6.Being Financially Able
    7.Love
    8.Inspiring, motivating and encouraging others
    9.Determination
    10.Courage

  89. Here’s my link to my values and explanations for each: http://truetooneme.livejournal.com/293931.html

As a list by itself, they are as follows:

    1. Quality
    2. Integrity
    3. Maturity
    4. Excitement, Fun, and Laughter (yes, I need all three. lol)
    5. Life-Long Learning
    6. Peace of Mind
    7. Effective Communication
    8. Accomplishment
    9. Healthy Living (Diet & Exercise)
    10. Self-Discovery

I chose these from the 20 that came from my brainstorming…glad we did this one! :o )

  90. This I would have to admit was hard for me after the 5th value

    1. Religion
    2. Healthy living
    3. Family
    4. Education
    5. Financial stability
    6. Travel
    7. Self-confidence
    8. community involvement
    9. living in content
    10. joy

    http://royzz.tumblr.com/

  91. At first I was like this is too easy, but like Libryia, I had to be totally honest. Here’s my Top 10 list in no particular order:
    Family
    Spirituality/Faith
    Friendships/Relationships
    Financial Security
    Honesty
    Privacy
    Freedom/Independence
    Compassion towards Others
    Communication
    Fun/Entertainment

  92. This list wasn’t that difficult for me to come up with but I did have to make sure I wasn’t thinking about “what would be good values to list, what should i value” I think in doing these types of exercises it’s easy to fall into trying to give the “pageant” answer and that just wouldn’t be productive. So, I thought through my life and about the things that I have, on a recurring basis, worked toward. Actually expended energy to do and the things that I’ve been passionate about the things that have angered me when they weren’t present, because those are quite obviously the things I value and I have back-up, support, to substantiate it…not just a thought that “this would be a good thing to value”. LOL. So, here is my list of things i value and the (R) next to them indicate what will be my top 10 (it was hard to pick a top 10). They are in no particular order:

    Relationships (Family and Friends) (R)
    God (R)
    Love(R)
    Success (R)
    Security/Stability (R)
    Experiences (R)
    Enjoyment (R)
    Personal Growth (R)
    Knowledge
    Faith
    Self-Awareness (R)
    Cultural Pride
    Self-Esteem (R)
    Comfort
    Harmony

    • I’m glad you didn’t give the “pageant” answer :) And I’m glad you made that point because it can be easy to think of our values in terms of what we *should* care about versus what we actually do value.

    • Pageant answers is a good way to describe it; I’m stealing that. I wrote a list as soon as I read the assignment on a post-it. As I was eating lunch I wrote another and at home that even yet another. I compared the list to see if I wasteuly representing the real me. The day after I posted my list I realized that spirituality is important to me yet it isn’t on my posted list.

  93. aww man, I used to have a personal mission statement and it was GOOD…I wish I knew where the heck it was, lol.

  94. Here are mine…they are in no particular order:
    God
    Family
    Success
    Education
    Helping others
    Leadership
    Living comfortably
    Legacy
    Friendship
    Love

  95. These are the things that I value most (but not in any particular order).
    Success
    Family
    Good Health
    Appreciation
    Friendship/Relationships
    Philanthropy
    Respect
    Integrity
    Trust
    Faith/Religion
Wealth (being financially stable and comfortable)
    Safety
    Appearance

This was a fairly easy task for me. I was able to write these down quickly and off the top of my head.
