Reset Your Life Day 30: Make 10 Personal Commitments

This post is Day 30 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life ChallengeLearn more and sign up for the program here.

I’m not a big believer in New Year’s resolutions anymore and here is why. But, I do think it’s useful to make personal commitments instead. A personal commitment is simply a promise that you make to yourself to take a specific action that supports your ideal life. A personal commitment is a serious promise and lasts beyond the beginning of the year because it’s meant to help you achieve your lifelong vision. Today, you will make 10 personal commitments to yourself.

Day 30: Make 10 Personal Commitments

Sit down today and make a list of 10 personal commitments that you would like to keep for the following year. Remember, these are serious promises that you are making to yourself in order to live your ideal life. You can make as few or as many as you want (I suggested 10 here for structure), but a list of more than 20 commitments probably becomes unrealistic and unwieldy.

For instance, one of the most powerful personal commitments that I made to myself this year was to distance myself from all the negative people in my life. It was a conscious process that I had to do for myself (and my own mental health) so that I could begin to cultivate a new way of thinking within my own mind and make more progress on my goals.

What are the kinds of personal commitments you can make to yourself that will completely transform the way you live your life not just in the year ahead, but in the years ahead? Watch this video if you need a bit of inspiration :)

When you’re done, please share your list of 10 personal commitments with us in the comments! How did you feel as you made your list?

  1. Dorothy’s 10 Personal Commitments:
    1. Live in the present – be alert to catch and change any negative thinking about the past or “what ifs” about the future.
    2. Avoid spending much time with negative people; strengthen relationships with positive persons.
    3. Remain open to new ideas and opportunities.
    4. Make health one of my priorities (enough sleep, conscious eating habits, physical fitness).
    5. Declutter one area each month, and give away or sell items until everything is decluttered.
    6. Smile.
    7. Live according to my own inner needs and values, and do not imagine or project negatively about what others “might” think of me.
    8. Be frugal; do not waste money.
    9. Keep in touch and show love to people whom I care about and who care about me.
    10. Thank God for everything.

  2. For my ten personal commitments, I decided to do a mini vision board to keep me on track. It features daily, weekly and monthly targets as well as “targets” for things I enjoy doing so I can make sure I am always incorportating a lil “happy” into my life.

I have tried to keep these realistic and doable so as not to set myself up for a fall.

    Anyway, here they go:

    1) Walk a minimum of 3 times a week for at least half an hour each time.
    2) Practice my piano at least 3 times a week for a minimum of 20 minutes each.
    3) Read at least 1 book a month.
    4) Do not buy things I don’t need. pay as much as possible towards debt.
    5) De-clutter at least one surface/area/drawer/shelf a month.
    6) (At work) Be firm, fair and consistant. Emply the NAD system as necessary.
    7) Continue to make an effort to maintain and build friendships.
    8) STOP THINKING SO DAMN MUCH! “Screw it, just do it!!”
    9) Eat more of the GOOD food I like (“healthy” food has negative connotations)
    10) Go to bed by 11.30pm Sunday-Thursday. Stick to a morning routine.
