Reset Your Life Day 5: Write a Personal Mission Statement

This post is Day 5 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life ChallengeLearn more and sign up for the program here.

Over the past few days, you’ve taken two important steps toward developing a personal mission statement: identifying your values and envisioning your values in action. For many of you, it was truly an eye-opening process to write out your values for your life and then compare them to how you actually balance your priorities. Today, you will put the exercises from Day 3 and Day 4 together to complete your personal mission statement. But what, exactly, is a personal mission statement, anyway?

Personal development website Dumb Little Man offers this great definition:

Your personal mission statement should be a concise representation of what’s most important to you, what you desire to focus on, what you want to achieve, and, ultimately, who you want to become. In its purest form, it’s an approach to your life, one that allows you to identify a focus of energy, creativity, and vision in living a life in support of your inner-most beliefs and values. Also remember that your mission will change over time as you and your life change.

I developed a personal mission statement a few years ago and it literally changed my life. Since then, I have trained over 200 people in my personal development workshops to develop their own personal mission statements and it is often a life-changing process for them. There’s something really powerful and empowering about being able to say YES or NO to opportunities that come into your life based on whether it fits within your personal mission and how you want to live out your values.

Day 5: Write a Personal Mission Statement

There are many ways to go about creating your own personal mission statement, but I will highlight my three-step formula that I use in my workshops here.

Values + Values in Action = Personal Mission Statement

Now that you’ve identified your values and what your values look like in action, you should now take at least 30 minutes to begin drafting your personal mission statement. You should take as much time as you need to reflect and write out your mission statement. It can be short-term or long-term, and should encompass your values and how you’d like to express them in your life. You don’t have to use ALL the values in your Reset 10 if you don’t want to. It may serve you best to only include your top three or you could include all 20 of the ones you came up with during your brainstorm. It’s up to you to decide what would be most useful.

The statement itself can be as short or as long as you think it needs to be, but the process and the final statement should serve to help you make different kinds of decisions about how you will live your life from now on. And remember, it will continue to change as YOU change over time, so don’t worry about it being perfect and final. This should be a work in progress, just like you!

As an example (please don’t feel like you have to do yours this way), here is what my updated personal mission statement looks like:

I value learning, independence, travel, creativity, achievement, and social change. I deeply appreciate laughter, good food, music and poetry in my life. I especially value authenticity and love in myself and others. Before I die, I want to have made a positive impact on the world for young people, women, and people of color. As a writer, speaker and coach, I will use my one life to affect many lives by helping people realize their goals and dreams. In my work and life, I will always tell my truth and make space for others to tell theirs. In my journey to empower others, I will not neglect my own family, friends, finances, health, or spirituality. I will remember that love is the only religion and that forgiveness is the highest form of love. And that fear means GO. I will remember that failure is only failure if you don’t learn anything and that nothing is ever so bad that you can’t get up and dance when the music comes on. And I will always, always choose love over fear.

When you’re done, please share your personal mission statement with us in the comments! Would also be great to hear about any “aha” moments you experienced as you completed this exercise.

Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

  1. Days 3 & 4 produced 2 eye opening “ah ha” moments for me. 1. My relationships do not last b/c I see many people as “non essential necessities.” Meaning interactions with others is a necessary part life but if the people do not ADD to my growth they become non essential & I move on.

    2. I view money as a necessary evil. Meaning my core values have allowed me great credit scores (over 750) but my just enough is enough attitude about money & employment does not allow me the ability to take full advantage of my responsible debt management.

These were 2 profound discoveries for me. Now I’ve got to learn to empower myself in these areas.

  2. This is so powerful, Rosetta – thank you! … both for the 31 day reset and for sharing your personal mission statement. As I was writing mine, I got a little choked up – but, in a good way. I found myself stating the good things about me and was reminded of how wonderful I am and what I have to offer and have already given to the world – which, of course, was given to me by God and nutured through the people and experiences in my life. Without further ado ;) , here is my personal mission statement:

God is love, and we manifest His love through our love for self and others. To this end, I will continue to work at knowing and loving myself fully and cultivating and maintaining mutually uplifting relationships with family, friends, and lovers. Likewise, in addition to developing and sharing my artistic talents – gifts from God that I, in turn, give to the world – I will seek and seize opportunities to meet the needs of both my literal, immediate family and my extended, global family. A unique, passionate woman committed to living abundantly and with integrity, art, culture, travel, and entertainment – both that which I produce and of which I partake – will always be an important part of my life and a means of direct and indirect fellowship with loved ones and the world at large. Someday my financial security and wealth will match the riches I already have in the form of a brilliant mind, sound body, kind heart, warm and loving spirit, strong will, loving family and friends, meaningful accomplishments, helpful failures and ever-increasing success.

  3. I will live a life that is first pleasing to God and satisfying myself second. Each day I will move forward with self discovery. I will eliminate all fear and live solely by faith. I will not conform to the world, I will proudly express who I am. I will push myself and give give 100% effort to my personal and professional advancement. I will actively provide love to my world and those around me. I will not only think of myself, but I will be an example and inspiration to young women all over the world. I will not compromise my salvation for temporary pleasures. I will prepare myself to be the perfect mate for that special man. I will grow stronger in the Lord every single day. I will create the Happy Me!

  4. My personal mission statement:

I value God, my family, health, personal growth, and Military career. I refuse to allow anyone or anything to get in the way of growth and development in any of those areas. However I also must remember that I need to handle every situation with the upmost kindness. No matter how hard it is!! I will learn to express and develop myself into the sailor, sister, child, friend future mother, wife, and leader that God put me on this earth to be and my mother raised me to be. In my journey for greatness, I will not neglect my own family, friends, finances, health or spirituality.

    • New personal mission statement:

I value God, my family, health, personal growth, and Military career. I refuse to allow anyone or anything to get in the way of growth and development in any of those areas. However I also must remember that I need to handle every situation with the up most maturity and kindness. No matter how hard it is!! I will learn to express and develop myself into the Sailor, sister, child, friend, future mother, wife, and leader that God put me on this earth to be and my family raised me to be. In my journey for greatness in everything that I do, I will not neglect nor forget where I came from and strive to use everything I have learned on the journey towards a happy, balance, and successful life to help others around me. I value to project to others the change that I want to see in the world and be the role model for other young people in my life.

  5. I feel motivation like never before after completing my mission statement.

    Here goes…….

I will be the best me I can be by using the spirits of power, love, & self discipline given to me by my Creator. I will hold strong to my values by cultivating a strong relationship with God. With his love, I will live a healthy life that has peace, growth, financial stability, and proper weight management. It is important for me to enjoy all aspects of life by traveling the world, reading, enjoying music, and laughing with my family & friends. Being the best me I can be also means the focus is not always on me. I will do my part to help others by giving my time, money, and words of encouragement. I have nothing to fear because I am bold, calm, and I have a well balanced mind.

This mission statement goes well with my mantra & I believe I’ll be able to memorize it.

  6. I value love, integrity, friendship, trust, honesty and healthy relationships. Over the course of time I hope to fulfill those needs. I also value self-love and love for others. I wish to eventually have an impact on someone’s life. I also realize that forgiveness is the true form of love and that letting go is a must. I will let go of the fears that haunt me and continue on the path of reaching my goals. I will always remember that quality is better than quantity. I will remember that comparing myself to others will lead me to unhappiness in the end and that I am my worst enemy. If there is no love, there is no guidance. I’m worth more than I give myself credit for and in the end I will be at peace with myself and accept me for who I am.

  7. My purpose is to use my passion and creativity to mentor and inspire women and girls of color to create societal messages about themselves that are exactly as they desire their lives to be: positive, thought-provoking and empowering; to harness their unique culture and lives experiences to mobilize their communities and the next generation through activism, service, and sisterhood. I value integrity, knowledge, self care, love, beauty, leadership, service, spirituality, my loved ones, philanthropy, culture, freedom, personal growth, and balance. I expect authenticity from others as well as myself. In my work and personal life, I try to be as honest as possible and I honor others’ ability to tell their truth as well. While I love the work that I do, I do not neglect my health finances, loved ones, or my connection with God. I always remember that I should live in the moment, appreciate the past, embrace the future, and give thanks along the way. Love and peace come before everything also I continue to remind myself that life is filled with beauty, laughter, creativity, passion, and God. Always.

  8. It took me a while to finish my mission statement. Here it is:

I value family, honesty, friendships, relationships, financial freedom, leadership, love and me time. Above all I honor my Christian values and my relationship with GOD. God is the head of my life and without Him there is no me. He is the maker of heaven and earth. I WAS CREATED IN HIS IMAGE. I am fearfully and wonderfully made. There is no other like me and for that I am glad. I am beautiful inside and out. I can do all things because he strengthens me. God has not given me the spirit of fear. I will move forward with my destiny, my calling and use the gifts that He has so graciously given me. I intend to uplift, encourage and motivate others through the words I speak, the words that I write and the gifts that I possess. I will mentor, coach and help others to see the best in themselves. My mantra is from Jeremiah 29:11. “I know the plans I have for you declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future”. I am predestined for greatness! I am in a constant transition as move towards my visions and dreams. I will start my own 501(3) c. I will become free from debt, people and things. Nothing can hold me back from my future. I will attract good things to me. I am what I think, so I will think positive and uplifting thoughts. I will smile, encourage and uplift those that I come in contact with. I will kneel before the Lord and humble myself. I will pray for others and myself whether I know them or not. I will spend quiet time with God. I want to hear what He says to me. I will go where He directs me to go. I will say what He directs me to say. I will change what He wants me to change. I will forgive because I cannot live in the past. I will love because it is the greatest command. I saw a quote by Ayn Rand. It stated, “Throughout the centuries, there were men who took first steps, down new roads, armed with nothing but their own vision”. I press on towards the mark for which I AM CALLED. I see my life filled with opportunities. I await the treasures that God has for me. I follow my gut instincts as they lead in the way I should go. I hear that gentle whispers which is the Holy Spirit speaking to me. I rest assured that I am in good hands. My needs and those of others are met because God shall supply all of our needs in Christ Jesus.

  9. Here is my mission statement. I also blogged about the experience.

I value peace, love, and Spirit- the Spirit of Divine and how it manifests through me. I believe that by honoring God, there is freedom and power. I aim to use my Divine connection to align my life with one that reflects my values, instead of one driven by fear and avoidance. I aim to participate in daily spiritual practice so that reconcile the love within, as well as empower other women to do the same. I aim to lead a life in which I show gratitude an support without judgement. I aim improve the relationship with my family of origin, as well as create a safe haven of serenity for my family of choice where every member is met with love and appreciation and where their health (physical, mental, and spiritual) and confidence in Self is deepened.

  10. I struggle with this one and i KNOW i can make it better, given time.

    MISISON STATEMENT
I value fairness, justice, sincerity and genuine decency and commit my life to all four.

I value making gains through my own hard work. Anything I have should not come at the expense of others.

My mission in life is to heal myself of past hurts, wrongs and pain so that I can live as an example of God’s blessing to others.

I will strive to practice fortitude in every waking minute.

  11. In all my ways seek Gods will for my life. He only is the reason I exist in this world. Cherish and hold dear to my heart his awesomeness. Know that because of Him I am free. I am Free to love and be loved. It is my right to pursue happiness and be happy. I am a Kings Kids and I am entitled to what His plan for me holds.

  12. I always love reading the comments of all of the other women striving to be HBW, HCW, HAW, HLW. etc. This exercise was particularly difficult for me because I was having a low day. But I think it was just what I needed.

    Mission statement

To constantly work on improving my relationships with family and friends. To love my partner without abandon but also make time for my own personal development. To live my life with confidence, integrity and kindness. To always remember I am important but no more important than any other creature on this Earth. To never forget who I am in the face of adversity. And to always strive for happiness in my life.

    • Thank you for sharing, Sharonda. I agree that it is encouraging and inspiring to read everyone’s mission statements. I had a feeling that I would enjoy reading others’ as much as I enjoyed putting mine together. I appreciate and respect everyone’s honesty and courage.

  13. My “aha” moment is the realization that in doing for family, friends, community, etc., I have been neglecting myself. I therefore need to allow myself time to achieve a balance between doing for others and taking care of myself.

    Personal Mission Statement:
Dorothy values Healthful Living, Integrity, Truth, Friendships, Family, Economic Security, Intellectual Stimulation, Community, God/Religion, and Nature/Ecology. I am deeply committed to doing my part to help make this a better world, a world in which both opportunity and responsibility are equally shared by all. I am also committed to the ecology and sustainability of the earth and its resources. In pursuit of living my values, especially the value of integrity, I have developed an attitude of openness about who I am and what I stand for. I make an effort to never judge anyone, including those who show ill-will towards me, because I know that each person acts according to his or her personal level of understanding of the world and how their own values enable them to function. I bear no ill will nor grudge against anyone who has harmed me, realizing that others’ reactions are often due to subconscious attitudes on their part rather than anything I personally said or did. I continue to speak out against injustice and accept any negative consequences that arise from so doing. My commitment to truth, social justice, and integrity often results in my neglect of my own best interests, and I am therefore determined to strive for a balance that must include taking better care of my health, seeking more social types of friendships with like-minded individuals in my community, and pursuing one or more activities that will enable me to gain a greater level of financial security.

    • “I therefore need to allow myself time to achieve a balance between doing for others and taking care of myself.” This. :-)

  14. This was both fun and challenging and I took a break to get a little inspiration by talking to my son. There is no doubt that I’ll improve upon this statement in the months to come. I always think I know myself well and then something like this makes me really think.

Yolanda values knowledge & learning, love, integrity, peace ,comfort, and happiness.  I approach each day with a fully open heart and mind and look forward to the possibilities that are to come.  I will freely give love to and receive love from the important people in my life (family & friends).  I value living a life full of integrity so that I am THE role model for my son; this includes being of service to others and planning for the future.   My life will not be complete if it is not filled with peace (in mind & body) and comfort.  I need a life full of happiness & laughter and will accept nothing less; I will accept each challenge and keep moving forward.

  15. Here is my work in progress- Personal mission statement

To live a life deeply rooted and connected to the Great I am. This will enable me to be a loving, joyful, caring, encouraging daughter, sister, friend, girlfriend and ultimately wife and mother. I will trust God for bigger things and dare to be who He created me to be. Knowing that no matter the storm- God is in control. I value success and I recognise that failure is not the absence of success but it is the neglect of trying. I am a life-long learner and will always strive to run in my own lane. I will turn my creative ideas into actions; refusing to let opportunities pass me by. I will live my best life now and put myself first; this includes living healthily, saving 10% each month and becoming financially responsible. I will not be afraid to live outside the box and I will take part in life experiments, this will lead me to discover my life’s purpose.

  16. Hi All,
I’ll share just a bit of my mission statement:

I want to become an expert at remaining in that core, focused, spiritual place no matter what appears to happen in my life. I want to achieve spiritual enlightenment. On the human level, I want to own my worth; bask in my ability; believe in myself; conquer the saboteur within.

  17. I value happiness as a way of living and not just a word. My relationships, love and confidence are the tools necessary to maintain that lifestyle. I want my integrity, spirituality and wisdom to be my calling card, and those I surround myself with will benefit from my character. As a creator I would like to spread my happiness and love not only to my friends, but to those not within my reach. My body and mind will benefit from healthy living, in order to be the best me I can be. My confidence will remind me that I am enough, and I will stand strong in any situation.

    http://www.saptastic.blogspot.com

  18. I value healthy lifestyles and habits, family, friends, loyalty, laughter and “me” time. I also value quality over quantity. I have an undeniable appreciation for authenticity and originality. This includes arts, culture, adventure, fashion and food. I want to be in a position to give to worthy causes I deem worthy. I will assist others in their academic pursuits. I will continue to educate and encourage myself and others to give their best. I will continue to help others think outside of their “norm.” I will remind myself to be more confident with the decisions I make about me and my , how I do and did and will no longer settle for choice b because it was a safe choice. I will remind myself that it’s ok to step into to the “unknown.” I shall not miss an opportunity for growth. All in all, I will own and care for me and all that comes with me; and remember to smile because it’s simply beautiful and it’s mine.

  19. This is my final draft I reworked this several times before I was content, thats the perfectionist kicking in.

I will not live a life of ‘if only’… I will look at new and creative ways of reaching my goals. I will continue to learn and challenge myself through education, by researching the things that I am passionate about. With work I will rethink my options with a ‘what I can do’ approach. I will choose to spend time with loved ones and choose to ignore unrealistic expectations from others. I will continue to nurture and love my child including them in important choices made and love the person they are. In conversations I will learn to listen more to the silence. I will make clear detailed plans of places I’d love to travel to and go . I will be the best version of myself and know that I’m more than someone’s option. I am at peace with myself; I accept self for who I am now.

  20. This personal mission statement has been the toughest exercise so far. I found your site thanks to the article in the Atlanta Journal Constitution. This came at a crucial time for me, a major birthday coming up, and your 31 Day Reset was just what I needed to get focused and achieve all I’m capable of, thanks Rosetta!

  21. I value God, marriage, family, finances, career, health, service/volunteering, education, joy, and most of all ME. I am a woman of God and want to be a “light” in a dark world. My spirituality will allow my relationship with God to grow stronger daily. Praying regularly & studying His Word more will allow my faith to increase and inner peace to surpass all understanding. My marriage will flourish b/c God is in control. Unconditional love, patience, and unity gives permission to focus on what I presently have rather than put attention on what I dont. Giving more time & attention to family, not just on holidays, during funerals, or weddings. Creating a dynasty with my husband that is “made for us” and given to us by God. Refusing to live a life based on material things, but one of service to others. To bless God and others with what was given to me. Not letting fear murder my dreams, and having my professional life reflect my personal values. Using affirmative words and positive thinking to cater to my holistic needs. I will always wear Courage, excude Confidence, have a prescription of Laughter, and carry Love in my heart. THE GREATNESS IN ME WILL GET ME TO MY DESTINY!!!

  22. This took quite a while but here it is:

My life will be a sacrifice of service. I pledge my energy and creativity to serving God, my family and my community. I want to devote myself to the things God wants for me. I want to be a good and righteous wife. I want children who I can richly and positively influence. I want to give birth to ideas, words, sounds and images that will strengthen and empower my people, and create a brighter tomorrow.

So I will educate myself. I will become disciplined enough to make wise decisions with my time and money. I will exercise my mind, body and spirit. I will cling to places where I can flourish. I will love and respect myself, and require nothing less from others.

  23. I value love, responsibility and wisdom. Through education, focusing on personal development, I strive to empower people, particularly African-American youth. To uplift my community to break socio-economic cycles that has created a disparity in the standard of living in urban areas. I cannot create positive change in my environment without first taking care of myself and I will appreciate the vessel God has given me. Life is not a destination, but a journey and I will make thorough efforts to seek silver linings. I chose to not be negatively influenced by adversity and to look to the hills for help.

    http://silverliningchronicles.wordpress.com/2011/01/14/day-five-personal-mission-statement/

  24. My Mission Statement:

God, family and friends will always be things I value deeply. I will continue to seek God and make Him the foundation of my life. I will continue to love my family and friends and find the good (though it may be hard) in each of them. I will never forget that God comes first, family and friends second. I will continue to be an honest person who shows integrity in all aspects of my life. I will not be afraid of change, I will embrace it and continue to grow into the woman that I am destined to become. I will not be afraid to be a full-fledged leader in all aspects of my life. I will continue to serve my community and be a positive force in the lives of others, because my community made me who I am. I will be prosperous, I will not struggle any longer, I will stay positive and optimistic that life for me is just beginning and that without struggle there is no progress. Though life may be uncomfortable right now, I know that I am on the right path to success.

  25. This is (so far) THE hardest. Day 4 was challenging..but putting it all together. That’s creating a Bible of my life! Will keep you posted. lol.

  26. In this precious life that I have been given, my relationship with God and my family are of the utmost importance, for this is where I acquire strength. I would love in this life to gain a higher learning and achievement in something more that the “right now”, to be able to share this learning, for this is where i will acquire knowledge and wisdom. I love a steady and rambunctious flow of creativity, for this will help keep the mind strong, and the heart happy. It’s a way to obtain peace and joy. Also in this precious life, learn to communicate effectively and freely, no strings or preconceived boundaries, for this is the tool, along with forgiveness and mostly love, that will cleanse the heart.

  27. I had a little commentary before I wrote this (read it here: http://www.amandamichellejones.com/?p=630). Here is my vision for my life:

My ideal life is one that is flexible and open enough that I have room to do whatever I desire, rather than giving myself over to work. I will live abundantly through love, creativity, inner peace, and sharing. I will manifest these values through educating myself and others, experiencing others through global travel, sharing my song (literally and figuratively), and fostering relationships – especially with family and friends. My professional life will be an extension of my personal values, such that my life is one of joy and not of strife. **Above all, I will embrace myself for who I am, where I am, when I am; embrace my life for what it is, where it is, when it is; and help others to do the same.**

    • *Above all, I will embrace myself for who I am, where I am, when I am; embrace my life for what it is, where it is, when it is; and help others to do the same.** – This is just awesome!

  30. Pingback: Reset Your Life Day 9: Do One Thing | Happy Black Woman | Personal Development for Success in Life, Love & Business

  31. I wildly pursue a Christ-centered life by being unreasonably good to myself and giving that same God-kind of love to others without conditions. I choose peace and positivity in my relationships, conversations, and work with children. I take good care of God’s resources so that I can support my husband, children, family members, and strangers. I create wealth for my childrens’ children, and explore the world without regret. I cultivate and protect an electric femininity that sets a standard and example for the people in my life. Yesterday’s lessons are in my fabulous, sparkly tool belt. But… I live for today, plan for tomorrow, and yield to the moment.

  32. I will live my truth and realize that I do not have to be anyone but myself. I will live a life of happiness and peace for my sake and that of my children. I will let go of people and situations in my life that are bringing me unhappiness and chaos. I will take care of my body, mind and spirit by feeding them with things and experiences that will raise me up to a higher level. I will pursue work that I am passionate about that challenges my nursing skills, knowledge and creativity. I will love and care for myself as I have done for others in my life. I will be the best mother, daughter, sister and friend without forgetting that I am still a phenomenal woman deserving of love, respect and happiness.

  33. I value the most basic of things. My life is an embodiment of experiences. I am a student to life and my desire is to share those experiences to empower young girls. In using my transparency to help others, I help myself and grow. No longer will I let my past control me and my fate or future. My present will be filled with love and happiness and a balanced life. Change is inevitable and there are some things I cannot change because they are out of my control. I will not dwell on them but embrace and push forward. I will always be true to myself and accept all of my flaws. As we enter into a new year, I will continue to see the good in the world and in people and have compassion on others.

  34. “I realize that love is the most important element in my life, and God is the foundation for everything I do. Without these two nothing is possible and with them nothing is impossible, they are not negotiable. I know that I AM good enough, not only am I good enough, I’m better than I even realize. My values, ideas, and opinions are important, even as the change, they are always important. I will no longer compromise my integrity, to appease others or let myself get lost in the ways of the world. If I lose myself I’ve lost everything. I will always strive to be a person I’m proud of, laugh because I can, and make decisions with an open mind and open heart. I will not let fear and doubt dictate my life, and instead replace these with trust and confidence. I want to see the world, take in as much of life as I possibly can. And along the way, if I can leave something better than I found it, I will do so. I know that the actions or inactions of others are not a reflection of me, I define me, and I have to be the one to assert who I am. I want stronger, lasting relationships so that I may give of myself unconditionally, and no longer will I be a person who just ‘talks the talk.’ All of my words will be supported with actions or I will no longer claim them. I will keep a creative outlet in my life, keep my mind and body healthy and always make time to do nothing at all.
And no matter how hard I fall, and no matter who is watching when I do, I will always, ALWAYS, get up.”

  35. I am super late but better late than never.

    Personal Mission Statement:
I value to love myself, to not limit myself. To enjoy life’s adventures as they are set in my path. I love my family and the love they show me. I will use love and passion in everything I set out to do. I will take all of life’s experience good or bad as part of learning and advancement to be a better me. I will let go of fear and worry. I’ll take full responsibilities for my own actions. Most important I refuse to give up on the quest of life.

  36. I believe in love, creativity and the power of personal expression. I believe that faith is nothing without action and that a life lived without risk is a life wasted. I am dedicated to developing a harmonious space where my passiong for writing plays an integral part in my personal and professional life.

  37. Personal Mission Statement:

I am lovable and capable of achieving all that has been set before me. I value the air that I breathe and the time that I have been given on this earth to touch each of its edges with my unwavering devotion to unite. I value the bond that ties us together both by blood and by ancestry, and I pledge to never stop until that bond is realized by all who cross my path. I have been given the direct opportunity to mold a new generation of uniters and I take on this challenge covered by your love and grace. I will continue to touch and teach those that God set before me. I am my family, I am my friends, I am all who I come in contact with…but most importantly, I am love, unconditional, unwavering, and sometimes even unsettling; but I am here….and I’m not going anywhere.

  38. I am so far behind but remain fully committed to completing EVERY assignment in order. This has been great! It took me a really long time to craft my mission statement and for now I am happy with it. Still planning to blog my experience. (I fixed my broken link BTW) In the meantime here it goes:

“My passion is birth and helping women see the strength they possess as they move through their pregnancy and birth process. As a literal midwife, I will be an agent for change in our maternity care system helping women have the empowering birthing experience they deserve. I will work directly with communities of color to bring awareness to and help decrease the ever present perinatal disparities plaguing our community. I will be a constant student of midwifery traveling the country and abroad to learn from and experience birth in many different cultures.

As a metaphorical midwife, I will use the lessons I have learned through observing physical birth to help inspire individuals to reach their fullest potential through metaphorical birth, ultimately inspiring women to achieve greater things in every aspect of their lives extending beyond the “labor bed.” I will be a published author with books, a popular blog and massive internet presence. I will provide seminars and become a sought after speaker who gives words of inspiration using the metaphor of birth as a representation for the growth and transformation of life.

I am committed to my family, my friends, my community, and my personal development and freedom. I value new experiences and adventures and will live freely, finding time to engage in travel, reading, laughing, meeting new people and engaging in intellectual conversation. I will constantly renew myself by focusing on my physical, mental, spiritual, and financial health. I will become more committed to my yoga practice and a whole foods diet. I will strive to be more tenacious, and to increase my faith in a vision that is larger than myself. I will strive to become a living example of an empowering metaphorical birth using prayer and meditation to help me remain connected to my purpose. I will strive to remain forever the humble teacher and student knowing that as I let go and let birth a wonderful life will be created.”

  39. Hello everyone! I wrote my personal mission statement…and it sounds like its all over the place. LOL! But I own it…and that is all that matters :)

Personal Mission Statement: I am a woman of integrity. I will stay true to my standards, holding myself (and everyone else) to account in regards to keeping their words and showing it through action. I will listen to my own intuition and honor the words of others as well. I will do whatever it takes to ensure financial/economical stability for myself. I will back up and let God take the reigns over my life…but also put in the work required in order to truly live my life as a child of God. Through my service to the community, I plan to plant a seed of motivation and hope in our future leaders. I will leave behind a legacy of love and compassion. I have a lot of goals/acheivements I plan to obtain, and I will do everything in my power to MAKE IT HAPPEN. I will keep the bonds with my family/friends strong…my support system…my rock. I will focus more on healthy living my closely monitoring what goes in/out of my body and taking better care of my body.

I will LOVE me enough to properly care for myself PHYSICALLY, MENTALLY, and EMOTIONALLY! :)

  40. Hello Ladies!

I had fun on this assignment. While crafting my personal mission statement I realized that I’m fairly on track to living it fully. The more I reconnect with myself and stop hidding behind doubt and fear, the more I realize I am clear about who I am, what I want, and how I plan to get it all!

Personal Mission Statement: I value love, family, creativity, and integrity. These foundational valueswill be expressed in all I do as I strive to be my most authentic self everyday. I will be a support to my family, friends, and networks as they have and continue to be to me. I will honor my giving nature while setting healthy boundaries to protect myself and empower others to reach their full potential without becoming or being co-dependent. I will embrace my deeply loving spirit understanding the love I give may not be reciprocated in the same manner but is not less than what I give. I will continue to embrace my creative and professional evolution as a writer and organizational consultant remembering the 2 do not have to be mutually exclusive parts of my life. I will continue to enjoy life as a singelton while opening and preparing my mind, body, and spirit to be the best wife, mother, and caregiver I can possibly be. And I will always be true to myself remembering complacency is not stability and evolution is necessary for growth.

    • I love your closing sentence’ I will always be true to myself remembering complacency is not stability and evolution is necessary for growth.’

  41. Ok, after 2 days of trying I finally wrote my mission statement…sigh. That took forever. The line you wrote “Love is the only true religion” helped so much (I “borrowed” it by the way). I wanted to write something that included so much of who I want to be, but it just got to be too long, so I decided to think about it like the mission statement of a business. I decided I needed to bump up any decisions I make, anything I say or do, the people I allow into my life and say “does this align with my mission”. So, here goes…oh and I think I ended up coming up with a new mantra! “I will live my life as if it were meant to be enjoyed”.

Love is the only true religion. I value this truth above all and I believe that acting in love brings me closer to God and positively impacts my relationships with friends, family, lovers, and most of all, with myself. I will act in love in all things. I truly value my relationships, laughter and enjoyment, learning and life experiences and will spend my time seeking to nurture these things. I will be the CEO of my daily life and will take calculated and strategic risks to create a secure and stable environment which allows me to do the things that make me happy without fear or regret. I will always make decisions that allow me progress. I will share my positive experiences, my laughter, my knowledge, and my success with others. I will live as if my life were meant to be enjoyed by myself and those around me.

  42. My Personal Mission Statement |

I Am ever evolving, unveiling the many complex and fascinating layers of me.
I Am loving FREEDOM, living my truth with integrity.
I believe that my purpose is to encourage others through Fashion, Music, Design, Art, and Writing.
I accept my divine purpose as ordained to me by the Most High.
I pay my gifts back daily!

    My Aha Moment!

It came a point in writing this where in the 1st draft it felt…lukewarm, just alright, but not complete. I wanted to crank it out but it was impossible because I knew I was holding myself back for fear of what others would “assume”, it clicked that its not about them, its about me living my life authentically and being able to scream it loud and give someone else the strength to do the same!

  44. I am a Daughter, A Sister, An Auntie, A Niece, A Cousin, A Friend and A Survivor. I am Confident, Fierce, Fabulous, Loving, Caring, Thoughtful and Hopeful. I am hard working and determined. I wish on stars and dream and my dreams. I Believe in Passion, Hope Fidelity, and Love. I am Everything!

  45. Had a problem posting this before, but here it is!

I am wonderfully and fearfully made and in me lies greatness. With each morning I am given, I will give thanks and start with a joyful heart. My family will see the evidence of growth and appreciation for who I am and who I am becoming. I will look in the mirror and be thankful for what I see and the opportunity to change what I do not like both physically and otherwise. Going forward, my investments will be into the things that matter most, such as my spiritual life, marriage and children, my health and education and growing the person I was meant to become. I will not fret over the things I can not control.
Everyday, I will release something that I have allowed to hold me down or back and take note of the lifted weight. With that knowledge, I will apply myself to living smarter and making better decisions with my time, money, energy and focus. I will continue to love those who love me and pray for those who do not, while moving forward.
I will not operate in the spirit that God has not given me, but instead in His divine and perfect will. Love, joy and peace are my sincere goals and I will work to focus on seeing life, people and situations through them as my guides.

  46. I am a unique and wonderful individual that values family, self-awareness, honesty and financial stability. I am the first and final role model for my daughter. I will teach her how to appreciate life. I strive to lead a healthy life abundant with healthy relationships and compassion. My pursuit of knowledge is never-ending. In my life God will serve as my guide and the gift of intuition will be used to assist me.

    • I just started this journey last week. Your mission statement is beautiful, especially being the first & only role model for your daughter. The never-ending pursuit of knowledge is also somethig that I value.

  47. Ok, so I know i”m like two days behind, but I have to comment on this quote from your mission statement: “I will remember that love is the only religion”…that gave me chill bumps, partially b/c it’s so profound and partly because I recently wrote a piece that pretty much says exactly that. The piece was really just me ranting and originally about one of my lesbian friends who’s aunt (whom she grew up respecting and admiring) has basically shunned her in the name of God…the piece talks about how, at the end of the day, love is what matters….actually, let me give you a excerpt from it, just b/c I feel the need to share it with you:

“What is the single most complex and powerful emotion God has given us? What emotion, stands out from all others that completely consumes and moves us? It’s LOVE. It moves mountains, it sustains us, it builds us up and makes us stronger. It’s complex enough to be different things to and for different people. It is lasting and unconditional. It layers under and folds around all other emotions. It is the catalyst for great and wondrous things. It is the single most powerful and complex emotion we have and the greatest linkage between us and Him. Love. Simply that. That is what it’s about.

However we disagree on the technicalities of life and religion. Whether we believe that sinners come in the form of unwed mothers or homosexuals or pork eaters or divorcees or lazy bums or whatever. Whether we believe our brethren are sinners or not is of no consequence to me or to you because it is THEIR fate to stand before God. What IS of consequence to each and every one of us is to acknowledge that each of us are His creations and despite your feelings and opinions about the choices of your bretheren, it is your ONLY duty to love them. For who are you to deny a child of God the love He provided you only for the purpose of sharing it with His children?”

  48. I value faith, love, family/friends and life-long learning. I have an appreciation for the arts, dance, and physical fitness. In my daily life, I want to show love toward others that way they may see Christ Jesus. In my profession as a nurse, I want to motivate and/or mentor young women while improving their self-esteem. I will be flexible, creative and practice autonomy in my career. In my life, I will always see myself the way God sees me. Financially, there is always enough. In fact, there is more than enough. I have enough to take care of my needs, allowing me to help others, and sow into the kingdom of God.

  49. My Mantra.
Forgiving those who hurt us is the key to personal peace.

I value, love,Honesty, family, financial independence, friendships and personal responsibility. I believe in God,goodness, fairness and personal freedom with out infringing on that of others. I want to actively pursue my side business of fashion design and start making it more profitable to enable me improve my life and that of my loved ones.
In an ideal world i would love for people’s associations not to be based, on race, color, tribe, sect, clan, personal pursuit etc but character(merit)

    • I absolutely LOVE the way your mission statement is worded. I feel you found a way to make all of your values fit into a simple statement and still be very clear about what you want. I struggled with accomplishing the same.

  50. ♥I am a loving, caring, giving- wife, friend, and Mother. I spend my time soaking up all of the knowledge and talents I can so that I can continue to enrich the lives of those around me. I live a life filled with joy, laughter and outrageousness. The values that mean the most to me are Dreaming of the future…Learning from the world around me…and always finding something to laugh about.♥

  51. As I make my way through this life, with my final destination being Heaven, I pray that my life will be a testament to the goodness of God. I want to be the person that my nieces and nephews, and young children in my community, want to be like when they grow up, because they see Jesus in me. I want to be the daughter, sister, grand-daughter, aunt, niece, cousin, friend, and someday wife and mother, that God would have me to be. I want to do everything in my power to hasten the return of Christ. I want to be a shining example of love, life, laughter, compassion, excitement, courage, hope, inspiration, and passion…

  52. Whew. This was difficult because I never did anything like this before. Here’s what I came up with:

My values include obtaining professional success so that I can achieve economic and financial stability for both myself and my family. My aim is to become a good example for my children and the youth in my community. By always working steadfastly in the direction of my dreams and pursuing a life filled with learning and continual personal and professional development, I will become the role model I aspire to be. I also want to establish a better relationship with God so that I can have His guidance and blessings throughout my journey. In finding God I also hope to find the love for myself and the confidence in myself that has been lacking in my life. By listening to my inner voice I aim to continue living within my means and I will proactively make time for the people and things important to me.

  53. Ahhh! I thought I would be able to catch up to the current day’s assignment tonight, but I feel the need to take my time (let it marinate) but thanks for reminding me that it does not have to be final. My little perfectionist would have me delay this assignment for too long.

  54. So here is my mission statement. I tried to use all 10 of my values as well as my personal mantra:

Mantra: “This Little Light of mine…I’m going to let it shine!”
Values: Christ Centered Life, Peace, Financial Security, Family, Self-love, success, motherhood,
    Education, Helping others, Healthy lifestyle

    Mission Statement:
My mission in life is to lead a peaceful, healthy, Christ-centered life dedicated to helping others. To love myself and my family with the same type of unconditional love that Christ has for me. To define “success” in my own terms – not by what society deems successful. To use Education as a tool to help me build a business that will provide “financial security” and not rely on a “paycheck” for stability. At the end of my life I want my legacy to be one where my children can be proud of me as a mother and be able to say I allowed my “little light” to shine both at home and in my community.

    • I love you mantra and your mission statement! I wish you the best in executing your mission!

  55. I’m mostly concerned with my relationship to God so most of my work will relate back to religion (fyi)

In my life journey I aspire to the day where I will: wake up every morning, with the europhoria of excitement that God has allowed me to live another day, and serve Him and Him alone. Follow the lifestyle that was given to me in accordance to my religion. Take care of the body God has given me, love the family I was given, learn more about this temporary world and live for the next world. I want to spend in the name of my Lord and be grateful and content with the blessings that have been bestowed upon me. Be self-confident and humble, constantly share the lessons I’ve learned with those in my community to spread the happiness that I have found. To travel and witness the miracles of God to encourage me to be steadfast in this religion in order to be able to witness paradise. Living life through the approval of others will never assure me happiness, for those people are not happy themselves. I feel that with all things that are done for the sake of God, is only when I will find true joy.

I’ll explain further on my blog http://www.royzz.tumblr.com as soon as I can, its going through maintenance

    • I <3 this! It is a great reminder of what our (believers) ultimate focus should be in this life.

  56. Living my life with the proper balance of spirituality, family, friends and travel is so essential. Vowing to always remain true to myself and completely honest with others is a must. I will use every situation whether good or bad as a learning experience and a way to grow emotionally, spiritually and intellectually. Most importantly, I must let go of all disappointments, mistakes and missed opportunities and not put a question mark where God has put a period. My love for creativity will open the door to my success and financial stability. I will use that stability to further develop the scholarship in honor of my father to continue to motivate high school students to develop their creative selves. The use of creativity is so important to me and I’ve realized that it is easy to lose if it is not continually nurtured. Overall, I desire to be a well rounded, always ready to help, determined, fearless, optimistic, can’t stop – won’t stop woman.

I was able to use all 10 of my values, as well as my personal mantra within my Mission Statement. This exercise was both therapeutic and fun! I did have an “aha” moment too…I’m so done with my current profession and now I’m totally focusing on being able to use my creativity to make a living. On to the next one…

  58. I value spirituality/faith, financial security, and good communication skills. Because God is very important to me, I will treat Him as such by spending more time and energy in prayer and Bible study. I will be more fiscally responsible. I plan to become more social and engaging.
I pride myself in being honest, private, and compassionate. And with this pride, I will be more truthful with myself and others. Instead of providing judgment, I will offer sympathy. And I will continue to respect other’s privacy and be mindful of what personal information I share with others.
I greatly appreciate my family, my friendships/relationships, and my freedom/independence. I love my family and friends and I will show that I do by keeping in touch with them and letting them get beyond my “hard exterior”. I will be comfortable in my own skin and I will not allow others’ opinions to influence/dictate my actions…I am the captain of this ship.
I will enjoy each moment of my life…I will take out more time to laugh and continue taking trips for pleasure.

  59. This was a challenge for me…and I’m grateful to say I completed it! :o )

Here’s the link to my mission statement post: http://bit.ly/eIbEcD; the actual one is written here below as well:

I am an active participant in all the beauty, joy, and excitement that life has to offer. I make wise decisions with my resources, which–as a result–fulfill my most important life values. I take ownership of every area of my life, and commit myself to being a living example to others of how to live with love, truth, and passion.

    • Trust me I honestly feel the same way. It is quite of abundance but once it was said and done it you made the first step into writing it down.
