This post is Day 6 of the 31 Days to Reset Your Life Challenge. Learn more and sign up for the program here.

Over the past few days, you’ve reflected about the current state of your life through assessing your values and actions. Today, you’ll get a chance to begin to go in-depth about your goals for each of the seven areas of your life identified in Day 2′s life assessment exercise. Today, you will create a life map.
But first, let me clarify what a life map is. A life map is essentially a visual/text representation of what your ideal life looks like. It’s really and truly one of the most powerful personal development tools for both envisioning and creating a “map” for the path to your own happiness.
I recently made a video about how to create a life map and how the process actually led my mom to start her own “side hustle” three years ago, which has since blossomed into a profitable, full-time fitness consulting business. This is powerful stuff!
Keep in mind that your life map should be in accordance with your values and your personal mission statement. The idea is that now that you’ve got a sense of where your life is, you can begin to think more clearly about where exactly you want it to go. Ready?
Day 6: Create a Life Map
Today’s exercise will take about an hour to complete. Please download the Life Mapping Workbook below to assist you in creating your life map. It’s a 13-page easy-to-use PDF guide to creating your own life map with colorful worksheets like the one you see above. You will want to print it out and follow the instructions inside.
Download the Life Mapping Workbook
Just to give you an idea of the end point, here’s my completed life map in a visual.
When you’re done, please share your life map with us in the comments! Feel free to post it in either text or picture form or both. Would also be great to hear about any “aha” moments you experienced as you completed this exercise.
Note: If you blogged about today’s assignment, please post the link in the comments so we can read it!

Pingback: Day 7: Write Your Ideal Life Narrative « Epiphanies Manifest Truths (emt)
This was a great exercise. From the comments I found some people making there maps on powerpoint. i went over and just went electronic with mine. i plan to print out the pages and tape them into my notebook and have one in my bedroom as well.
I got stuck on this one… I’m behind about 5 days and trying to catch up today. This was challenging because it was difficult to sift the “main points” mainly because I have pretty practical short-terms goals for myself along with pretty lofty long-term goals. I wasn’t sure which I wanted to put on the map, but decided to do a mix of both in most places.

I enjoyed this assignment

I kept procrastinating on this one so I am waay behind. I think the power of setting goals and knowing I can and will realize them brought up a bit of fear for me. I’m delving into what’s that all about for me. Overall I did enjoy the exercise. I feel like I am learning to dream again. Thanks Rosetta!

I found it easier to look at long term goals in this exercise 5-10 years than a 1-2 year span, which is actually a good thing for me!
I did the long and short version. I will start with the short version, then expand on it in the longer version.
These are all the things i plan to do* to make better use of my time and improve my life and bring me closer to who i am (*should already be doing!)
LIFE MAP – SHORT
LIFESTYLE
20-30 minutes walking at minimum 3 times a week
Work on my private tuition company
Practice piano
Declutter
Read
WORK
Associate with colleagues i like
Limit interaction with those i don’t
Be firmer and consistant in my dealings with the children
Learn to say NO!
Keep work day as short as possible
EDUCATION
Re join library (already did it)
Read more (doing it)
FINANCES
Pay off debts
Spend less on general crap
Save, save, save!
HEALTH
Walk 20-30 minutes 3 times a week
Eat more of the “healthy” food i like (i use inverted commas as i prefer to think of it as “good” food rather than “healthy” as the word healthy in relation to food brings up all kinds of “boring rabbit food” connotations! in reality there are plenty of foods that are “good” that i like to eat).
Rejoin the gym(!)
Re start swimming lessons(!)
FAMILY
Gain respect in general
RELATIONSHIPS
Learn to make myself vulnerable by taking down my walls.
LIFE MAP LONGER VERSION
its the issues here that led me to make the decison i will take in the shorter version.
LIFESTYLE
Pretty much the same as the short version
WORK
I really hate the fact that there are some people i just don’t like but still have to work with. I also hate the lack of respect from both the kids and certain colleagues.
To a certain extent i hate the lack of freedom that comes from working for someone else and having to follow arbitary rules. I also hate constantly needing to look for areas to take my lunch break since i hate being in the staff room (the music room has proven to be my salvation 3 days a week, and ties in neatly with me needing to practice piano anyway. plus the door locks, yay!).
The ideal solution to all these problems is to just work for myself which i eventually hope to do with my tuition company.
in the meantime i need coping strategies to deal with the above situations so that i can at least feel better about being there. (for what i plan to do (am doing) see short version)
EDUCATION
For once i would love to study a subject that i have an actual interest in rather than just what will get me a job. i used to talk about doing a sociology or psychology degree “for fun”. (yeah, a nerd studies for fun lol) but its just too much money, plus a lack of income for something that is just for fun.
However, what i CAN do is read books on subjects that interest me, which i can get for free from the library yay! And i have already joined the library.
FINANCES
pretty much same as short version
HEALTH
pretty much same as short version
FAMILY
Short version understated this part lol
I want to be treated as an equal by my two older sisters and not be treated as an over grown 10 year old. I’m in my thirties for goodness sake!!
I want to be open and honest and feel free to speak my truth, without fear of judgement or ridicule.
I want to be able to be who i am without fear of judgement or ridicule.
I want my views and opinions to be respected.
I want my feelings to be respected.
I want to be appreciated for the person i AM and not just when or because of what i can do for them.
I want my NO respected.
I want to be treated as NADINE, not nadine the little sister or nadine the “baby”.
RELATIONSHIPS
I need to stop fearing judgemnt and rejection enough to be vulnerable and let people (GOOD people) close to me.
I need to know that there ARE good people in the world and i need to let down my guard and let them in.
i also need to know that God removes certain people from my life for a reason and i should do better at letting go.
i am coming to realise, its one thing to say i “need” to do these things, but that word just adds extra pressure.
This was a wonderful exercise, the most inspiring one to me thus far. I did a short version as a summary, as well as a long version with many details about actual activities that I can implement (like a “to do list.”) I have done the graphic with the main points summarized and ready to print and post next to my bedroom mirror.
Sharing my short version, as follows:
Lifestyle – A combination of creative activities (art, music, gardening, nature) and people-oriented activities (social, volunteer service, travel).
Work – Entrepreneur (or part-time work) in an activity that is both income-generating and creative and allows me enough free time to pursue my other interests.
Education – Lifelong learning through reading books and attending workshops, classes, and conferences.
Finances – No debt, income adequate to pay all the bills plus enough to also pursue the personal activities that are important to me.
Health – Healthy eating, maintain proper weight, exercise, strategies to deal in a positive way with seasonal affective disorder during winter months.
Family – Let family know how much you love, admire, and appreciate them.
Relationships – Maintain and strengthen existing relationships; seek new friendships; connect with people locally; remain open to the possibility of finding a supportive loving partner.
To keep my brief: this exercise really put some weight off my shoulders on things i need to work and going to work at. I throughly enjoyed this exercise

I allowed this assignment to side track me from the program. I kept putting off printing the workbook off and before I knew it I was like 5 days behind. But I finally finished the assignment last night and I was pleasently surprised at how clear I was on how I wanted my life to look in each of the seven different areas. It was refreshing to see my ideals down on paper. I kept thinking are my goals and expectations realistic? But then I’d quickly come back and think YES they are realistic and there are more than enough resources in this world for me to have exactly what I desire if I’m willing to do the work.
I’m totally with you on getting sidetracked with this one! I’ll agree that it’s definitely nice to see everything down on paper. I guess this assignment was so difficult because I never really thought that I could REALLY have all the things I’ve ever wanted in life. That idea threw me!
I realize I side-track assignments I think are going to be hard or unrealistic. I’m glad you fought through and got it done!
Read my latest blog post…Life Map and Narrative– RYL Days 6 and 7
Wow I thought I was the only one who got sidetracked! Congrats on not letting time consume you! I truly believe all of our dreams and goals can be done as long there is Faith –>my new “f” word

I loved today’s exercise; I was pleasantly surprised that I got through it with ease. Before today I believed that I had no focus, as I was no longer able to do the type of work that I once loved. I now realise that I was using that one negative thought to cloud my mind from the other things that I DO want to do. Amazing how putting things down on paper can make you see the wood from the trees

At the end of this, I have to say Yahweh is awesome. I’m definitely gonna be like Rosetta’s mom & keep my worksheets. The past few exercises have helped me name my stumbling blocks, but most importantly, they have helped me name my dreams. I thought I had a pretty good vision for myself – and I did – but creating this life map & my personal mission statement has really helped me realize where I’m headed. I’m definitely moving into the consulting field ($), but it will all be fueled by my research ($) & coupled with teaching others how to help homeless youth in the classroom ($). (Y’all see how I just diversified my income sources? You like that, don’tcha?) ::wipes tear, grins::
Take a peek at my life map here: http://www.amandamichellejones.com/?p=634
Life Map | This one had me stuck, obviously as I am finally sharing my life map.
I am glad its done, it feels right and finally before my eyes I see whats truly important to me!
Lifestyle | beautiful, comfortable home (well designed/curated by Moi), ready to entertain; luxury, shabby chic/urban chiq, travel 4-5x per year; dining out 2-3x per week, cooking (for guest) 2-3x per week
Work | CEO of Me! (love that) lol – singing, acting, speaking & writing books, poetry, plays, etc…
Education | Always gaining wisdom & insight and sharing it with others, learn about food/drinks from other cultures and develop new, creative, hands on talents; learn more about Philosophy, Politics and Religion
Finances | Get Out of Debt! Once and for all…, learn about savings/investing and the proper use (if any) of credit cards, save for fun/misc, Lend NOT Borrow
Health | Visit dentist/doctor regularly, excercise 2-3x per week, transition w/ knowledge to a healthier, natural dite, attend church regularly for mental/spiritual guidance and fellowship
Family | Spend more time with my family (states/abroad) vacations, holidays, just because, encourage/research starting a profitable family business, speak to family weekly by phone, communicate and visit incarcerated family members, attend ALL family reunions
Relationships | Fellowship w/ friends 2-3x per week, host dinner parties at home, meet/friend people from various backgrounds
this exercise was a doozy for me, but yours seems very clear. Good one
“CEO of me” I like that!

Can anyone post a life map document that can be edited? Or can you email me one? I’m having trouble creating one. I’m not too computer savvy.
You can make one here at bubbl.us. I made mine there and you can export it as a jpeg file and save it to your computer.
Lifestyle: Daily prayer, bible reading, travel, visit hometown once a month, and enjoy the city on the weekends
Work: Promotion, conferences, and organizations
Education: Consider Nurse Practitioner program, read two books a month, hobbies-piano, spanish
Finances: Pay off debt, pay bills on time, and increase savings
Health: Keep doctor appointments, exercise 4 X a week, group classes, clean diet, multivitamin, supplements, water, Lose 30lbs
Family: weekly phone calls
Relationships: Keep in contact more by phone, email, social networking sites, girls night out, date nights
my life map is a lil bootleg, but its complete!
http://bit.ly/f1E94d
I asked my spouse to help me with this, but now we’re thinking of doing one together as well as individually so thanks for that suggestions!
Lifestyle – 1 week vacation 1x per year, buy a home.
Work – secure managerial position in a museum, publish a novel.
Education – investigate PhD program, attend seminars, lectures, & continuing education courses
Finances – save 6 months’ salary, pay off student loans
Health – regular exercise, clean eating, annual physicals, good mental health, dental checkups.
Family – weekly phone calls/skype, one-on-one time with relatives.
Relationships – In-person meetups with friends, stay connected with spouse, meet new people.
Whoo! Working on the Life Map was quite a challenge…here goes:
Lifestyle: Vacationing 1x a year; Owning real estate; Active in social/community events; Decorate my home
Work: Prosperous career in federal government; Teaching at major university; Event planning business owner; Learn Spanish fluently
Education: CPA; CGFM; PhD in Accounting; Certification in event planning; learning more about global finance/politics.
Finances: Debt free;Good credit score; 6 months savings or more; travel/spending fund; maxing out 401K; trust funds for children
Health: Regular checkups; Regular exercise regimen; Clean eating; Take vitamins regularly; Lose weight to size 8 and maintain it.
Family: Weekly phone calls w/family; get togethers at least 3x a year; more visits with Mom and Dad; send family members money (if need arises)
Relationships: Regular social outings w/friends; dinner parties at home; romantic and supportive life partner; kids (someday)
I learned that I say “I want” a lot instead of actually doing what it is I want and that it is important for me to feel that people believe I am better off than I actually am. *sad face*
Lifestyle: Get organized so I can entertain at home more often, find ways to engage my passions (cooking, reading, planning), without it feeling like a chore and taking away from the 99 million other things I have to do.
Work: Find a job that allows me to do what I enjoy and helps to build me up professionally as well as personally. Gives me a sense of fulfillment for the work I do.
Education: I love school and learning and I never want to stop. I believe I will be a lifelong student and hope to have the opportunity to travel the globe and study at a multitude of institutions.
Finances: Besides getting to a place where I’m not worrying about how I will pay for something, I want it to be ingrained in my psyche how to manage money well, the fortitude and discipline to follow through on managing it well and the saavy to make it work greatly for my benefit. I also want to use my money to positively impact my community.
Health: I miss my size 6′s and 4′s so much!! Getting back into a regular routine, not just a once weekly effort to achieve the goals I say that I want, but do little to meet. I love exercise, I love vegetables and I love feeling healthy and relaxed. Not doing what I know I need to do to have these experiences daily is only making my condition worse. Mentally and physically, I no longer wish to feel drained.
Family: I feel that my relationships with my immediate family are absolutely wonderful. I wish I could see my brother more and live near him. I miss my sister and wish that I could reach her where she needs it. I don’t understand her choices and decisions at all, but I love her. As for my extended family, I care deeply for them, but I do not know them well and I am not sure that’s a bad thing.
Relationships: I long for the closeness I felt with my best friend. She was my soulmate and I miss that terribly. While I am learning to get over the disolving of our friendship, I crave close friends. I miss the sisterhood of a close girlfriend and the platonic awesomeness of a dear guy-friend. I want meaningful, genuine, long lasting friendships, but I am not sure that I know how to make friends anymore.
I learned that I say “I want” a lot instead of actually doing what it is I want and that it is important for me to feel that people believe I am better off than I actually am. *sad face*
—- now that you know this, if you desire to change it, you can.

Here is my Life Map: http://keikokaveri.tumblr.com/post/2135827937
This was AWESOME! I think this may have been my favorite activity thus far.
Okay! Whew…my life map is finally done! I did mine in power point…but I will just list each one here:
Lifestyle: Live on my own with my kids and travel at least twice a year.
Work: To own my own business focusing on helping girls and women “live their best life”.
Education: Complete my degree in the field of Education (going all the way to my Doctorate).
Finance: Debt free, 1 year worth of savings, College fund for kids, good credit
Health: To be at peace mentally, Healthy eating and daily exercise which will bring me down to a healthy weight which I will maintain.
Family: To have a decent relationship with my mother.
Relationships: To have healthy relationships where trust and love are at the center.
A healthy relationship centered around love and trust is very important to me. While going through this process I am making sure that I always remember that one of my biggest priorities is to keep my marriage a major part of this reset!
I wish you luck on achieving everything you want in your life map! I especially liked your work focus- I think a business to help women “live their best life” is amazing and awe-inspiring!

This is my life map and my reflections of the first week so far. http://naturalbloggingsofayoungsocialworker.blogspot.com/2010/12/31-days-reflections-days-3-6.html
I enjoyed completing my life map. The only downside was that I couldn’t find my crayons last night to color it.
I’ll get around to posting it on my blog soon, but I do have a copy ready for my desk at work.

Doing the Life Map was fun!! I know everything I want to do with my life and how to do; I just need to do it!!!
Day 6 is posted…I’m so happy I did it!

This exercise was great and helps to give me a little more clarity. Here is where you can see my life map:

Okay, so it’s a recession…and I don’t have my own printer…so I didn’t print out the whole life-map workbook. LOL I DID make a map though, which can be found here: http://j.mp/fROwPK. Great fun! Lots of work, but glad I did it. Excited for tomorrow!
)
Okay, I couldn’t print my Life Map out in color, so I’m going to do a written version instead. Here goes…
Lifestyle: Connect with like minded individuals with similar interests, do some international travel and take more weekend getaways, use leisure time to create and work on ideas, network and EXPLORE.
Work: Find the almost perfect job, build relationships and have a photography side hustle.
Education: Read books about topics that would not normally interest me, take photography courses, read my Bible more.
Finances: Save more and spend thoughtfully.
Health: Yearly exams, 6 month dental check-ups, weekly workouts and no fast food.
Family: Do more family activities and communicate more often.
Relationships: Plan more fun events with friends and begin dating.
This exercise was actually kind of easy because I did a lot of the leg work in the previous exercises. Loving this!!!
I love the detail of this! Be blessed on your journey : )
Thank you!
I was a photography hustle too! Twins!
This one was a doozy! Anyone else do a joint Map with their partner???
Check out my highlights at: thecurlymisfit.blogspot.com
I didn’t do a joint map, but now that you mention it I am going to suggest me and my partner do this since our lives are happening together! Thanks for the idea. How did it go doing it with your partner?
ooh, your unplug day… i keep saying i should do this more often…

I made my life map using Powerpoint, which was great for me since I love all things electronic.
I think I want to do the same thing!! I love Power point. I need to shell some money out and buy the publisher program.
