The Cupid Shuffle Might Save Me from Diabetes

Yesterday I did my first 30 minutes in the gym. For those of you that workout all the time, for like an hour or whatever, my little 30 minutes may sound wimpy to you. While I’ve always been a thin person, I’m what my mom (who just happens to be a fitness trainer) calls “skinny fat.” I’m pretty sure she made that term up. But what she means is that even though I’m thin, I’m still not healthy. The main reason: I don’t like to exercise. Actually, that’s putting it mildly. I HATE to exercise. It’s right up there on my list of eating raw onions or watching a Flavor of Love marathon. So, like with all things that I don’t like to do, I procrastinate. I tell myself over and over, “I’ll go tomorrow.” But tomorrow never comes. That’s why I put daily exercise on my list of personal commitments for the year – I know that as I get older, the more important exercise will be for my health. And I want to live a long and healthy life. My grandparents on my mom’s side both suffer from diabetes and high blood pressure. They take way too many pills. They have way too many doctors. That kind of life would be a nightmare for me. I don’t know enough about my biological father or his parents to know how healthy they were, so I like to imagine that they were all in tip top shape and passed those genes down to me.

So last night I go to the gym in my apartment building, and it’s packed with everyone else who promised themselves they would exercise every day in 2010. I worry I won’t be able to make it through the entire 30 minutes. I grab my iPod for strength because music is literally the only thing that can get me through. I have a playlist for every mood I’m in – or so I thought. What soundtrack  goes with “I can’t believe I’m in a room full of machines designed to bring pain to my body?” I do have a workout mix full of hip hop songs, but the genre of music that really gets me pumped is Baltimore club, dance or house. I did five minutes each on the treadmill and bike, then 10 minutes doing a circuit on the weight machines and then two sets of knee raises. Then I spent the rest of the time dancing in the big wall mirrors to the song, “Cupid Shuffle.” I have no idea what I’m doing in there. I don’t know if I’m doing cardio or whatever else people do in the gym. I think the buff guy that comes in there four times a day is secretly laughing at me. But hell if I care. I’m just glad that I’m doing something.

  6. I ran sixteen miles on Saturday…was supposed to do eighteen, but the trail in Montgomery County was icy in spots (which is tiring) and I ran out of water. So this week I got a Camelbak.

Exercise has to be something you like. For me, it’s being outside–so much so that I would rather run in the rain than get on a treadmill. Maybe you’d like a class?

  8. I can’t believe that there is a wikipedia page for Bmore club! I’m from NJ and we love our club music too. So I understand that hip hop doesn’t always translate to danceable or workoutable (???) music. LOL!
