In the spirit of National Poetry Month, I thought I’d share a few of my favorite poems written by a few of my favorite happy black women. I turn to one of these poems whenever I need a dose of affirmation that I am worthy, that I am amazing, that I belong here.

  1. The latest eve

    In the latest dream
    you tried to escape
    but i had special powers
    and wouldn’t allow you
    to deny me
    and with these extra eyes
    “I seen” and came with
    ambition

    In latest dream
    you couldn’t conceal
    yourself from me
but I didn’t have to chase you
    I was formed from
    natural earth
    nature took seeds
    from her bosom
shaped me to fit the caption
    for your desire
    gave me a rich spirit
    a laugh deflecting disaster
    so you would understand
    I was too” mean”

    I’d be the model woman
    your friends want to
    cohabit with
    they’d say, “I want one”
    your reply would be,
“ Man, get you a dream”
    this one is retired

    in the latest dream
    you didn’t dream of
    escaping
‘cause I am the stuff of
    your dreams

  5. Just wanted to share a poem I wrote several years ago.

“The Essence of the Black Woman”

    She’s full of beauty,
    With a hint of grace.
    Her style is original,
No one can take her place.
    The black woman is today,
    She is also tomorrow.
    Looking to bring joy,
    While filled with much sorrow.
    A beautiful african queen,
Who sits high upon her throne.
    Planting her seeds of knowledge,
In the place she calls home.
    Some judge her wavy hair,
And the thickness of her lips.
    Never seeing into her mind,
Only the widness of her hips.
When you look at the “black woman,”
    Look into her soul.
    Judge not her outer appearance,
For she has a heart of gold!
