I’m in Mexico! I flew from Atlanta (ATL) to Leon, Guanajuato (BJX) and then took what should have been a 90 minute cab ride to San Miguel de Allende, but turned out to be a 2.5 hour adventure out here in these cobblestone streets because we could not find my casa! My cab driver was really nice about it though, so it wasn’t that bad. We decided our motto would be, “Si se puede!” LOL.
My Airbnb apartment was well worth the drive, with fresh flowers and fruit waiting for me. Everything was exactly as pictured in the listing and the wireless internet is working great so far!

Of course, one of my first stops was to el mercado so I could make a delicious dinner in my apartment. As I began shopping, I discovered that the dollars to pesos conversion rate is pretty awesome here! I found a whole rotisserie chicken with potatoes and onions for $4, arroz con tomate (Mexican rice) for $1, fresh handmade corn tortillas and a container of salsa verde for $1. But being able to cook and write and relax in a beautiful space in the middle of Mexico…that’s priceless!
I’m starting to explore the restaurants here – which don’t look anything like restaurants in the U.S. by the way. Some of them are just little stalls or the front of someone’s home facing the street. But I had an amazing lunch the other day at Los Milagros, one of the top-rated places in San Miguel. I ordered their most popular dish – the arrachera “volcano” bowl, which is grilled skirt steak and cactus(!) served in a big hot lava rock covered in green sauce, topped with grilled panela cheese. Plus fresh guacamole, pico de gallo, white beans and housemade tortillas on the side. This meal was sooo good. Absolutely blew my mind!
So far, this town is definitely NOT what I expected. I’m taking my time soaking up the sun, the food, the language and the culture here in San Miguel. Excited to go on a few tours this week!
