Welcome to the Diary of a Happy Black Woman

“Do not let your fire go out, spark by irreplaceable spark, in the hopeless swamps of the approximate, the not-quite, the not-yet, the not-at-all. Do not let the hero in your soul perish, in lonely frustration for the life you deserved, but have never been able to reach. Check your road and the nature of your battle. The world you desired can be won. It exists, it is real, it is possible, it is yours.” - Ayn Rand

Happy new year and thanks for reading! Inspired by Gretchen Rubin’s blog, I began this site as one of my personal commitments for 2010 to start my own happiness project. While I love Gretchen’s work and others that have undertaken similar yearlong projects, I was disappointed to find none of those kinds of stories being shared in the African American community, at least not from what I can tell from reading blogs and scouring the shelves in my local bookstores. I know that our stories, the inspiring stories of black women on a quest to live happier lives are out there, they may just be overshadowed by the Karrine Steffans of the world taking up space on the bestseller list. I thought this project was especially important right now since 2009 (hell the last few years) was a tough year for the black woman, in particular. With report after report after report about how lonely, angry and unlovable we are, I believe we need to be intentional about not internalizing the negative stereotypes that keep getting repeated over and over. Of course Tyler Perry’s movie Diary of a Mad Black Woman didn’t help any. I’m beyond over it, and I’m sure you are, too.

I appreciate all of the amazing African American women bloggers that write thoughtfully about dating and relationships, being a mother, fashion and beauty, politics and Black culture. But this blog is different. I will probably touch upon some of those same topics at some point, but mostly I share with you here my own yearlong journey to become happier and more fulfilled in my own life in the hopes that my story will inspire others. I invite you to join me as I deal with the real business of finding meaning, becoming happier, and living my best life.

Head on over to the about page for more info about me and why I started this blog.
