This weekend, I was in Los Angeles attending a 3-day business conference. But I had a few other things on my agenda as well!
On Friday night, I went to see my girl Anita Baker on the last stop on her Farewell Tour! She was gracious, playful and sang all my favorites, including “Caught Up in the Rapture.” It took me wayyy back to being a teenager listening to her music on the “quiet storm” radio station, singing along like I had even a clue of what she was talking about at that age.
Coincidentally, my cousin Keith (pictured) was in LA at the same time, so we got to have dinner together at one of my favorite restaurants, Nobu. Keith is a professional boxer and travels around the world just having adventures and enjoying life when he’s not in the ring. He’s a few years younger than me but we always have good conversations about life and business!
And then on Sunday, I went to the conference in the morning, then I left to go have a spa day in Beverly Hills at the Ciel Spa in the SLS Hotel. I felt so refreshed after an aromatherapy massage and an oxygen facial. I flew back to San Diego in the evening my boo picked me up from the airport and we went out for Korean BBQ!
All in all, it was a very relaxing and productive weekend (which are my absolute favorite kind of weekends).
I was on Instagram stories posting tidbits of my experience throughout the weekend (follow me @happyblackwoman) and I wanted to share some of my top tips for making the most out of attending a live event!
TIP #1: Prepare in advance and bring everything you need to feel comfortable.
When I attend any conference, I plan out all my outfits beforehand and pack the day before so I don’t feel rushed or forget anything. I ALWAYS bring a jacket and shawl with me because I get super cold in those hotel meeting rooms. I also bring my favorite snacks in my purse so I don’t get hangry (not hungry – hangry) and lose my concentration thinking about lunch/dinner.
TIP #2: Be open to meeting new people who can add value to your life and business.
As an introvert, networking and talking to strangers is definitely NOT my thing. But when I go to conferences, I commit to connecting with at least 3 people who seem to share similar interests, values and goals. This weekend, I met a fellow coach who is growing a movement to empower women in the UK. We had lunch together and I got some great ideas and inspiration from her!
TIP #3: Set an intention and have faith that it will manifest.
My intention for attending was to get new, creative ideas for marketing my business. I did some much-needed brainstorming on my own in my notebook, but I also received ideas from the speakers and attendees during the conference. I now have an action plan for improving my content creation and Facebook advertising as a result!
TIP #4: Incorporate self-care and FUN into your experience.
When traveling to attend events, I like to book a spa appointment in advance so I can treat myself well while upleveling my business at the same time. I also make dinner reservations at some of the best restaurants in that particular city. And if there are any of my favorite singers in concert, I get tickets to see them.
Hope these tips are useful to you!
