“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” ― Ralph Waldo Emerson
I’m LOVING Jamila Woods’ new album – HEAVN (available on iTunes & Spotify).
Her song “Way Up” is the story of my life. (click here to listen)
I’m an alien from inner space
They can’t read my mind all in my face
No one knows I’d rather spend my days
alone on my pillow
I first heard it a few months ago when she opened for Corinne Bailey Rae here in San Diego. I got emotional as I listened because it’s all about being different, which hasn’t always been easy for me to come to terms with in my life.
Back in high school, most kids my age thought I was stuck up.
Thought I was better than everyone else.
All because I kept to myself.
I was quiet, nerdy, creative and weird.
I was young in age, but I had an old soul. I loved poetry and music from the 70s-80s. I didn’t have a lot in common with my peers because I always felt much older than I really was.
All I wanted to do was be alone so I could think and read and write.
Even as a teenager, I knew I was different and that I wanted to live a different kind of life.
I just didn’t know what that would look like.
These days, I’m more spiritual than religious, but when I was growing up, I loved going to church because it gave me comfort and direction amidst the drama that was going on in my life.
One Sunday, I heard the pastor talk about the difference between believers and non-believers.
He read a scripture about how we were “IN the world, but not OF the world.”
His words immediately resonated with me and have remained one of my favorite spiritual reminders.
Whether you’re spiritual or not, this phrase can help you understand the internal struggle that can happen as you do the work to create the life you really want.
Just ‘cuz I’m born here
don’t mean I’m from here
I’m ready to run
I’m rocket to sun
I’m way up…
I’m way up…
Here’s the thing:
When you decide to walk in your purpose, you set yourself apart from everyone else.
When you choose to do what you’ve been called to do, you transform from the inside out.
However, you still have to live in the world with other people, even though you have been awakened to the truth that you are meant for MORE.
And as you start to own your truth, you realize:
Your goals are not their goals.
Your dreams are not their dreams.
Your thoughts are not their thoughts.
Your words are not their words.
Your decisions are not their decisions.
Your actions are not their actions.
Indeed, your very EXISTENCE is not always going to make sense to the rest of the world and the people who have chosen to conform to a life they think they HAVE TO live.
I don’t care what they say
I’ve been waiting for so long
Call me by my name
They keep telling me I’m wrong
We are not the same
I don’t belong here
I don’t belong here
Most days, I feel expansive, like I can do anything.
Other days, I doubt myself and my ability to fulfill my purpose.
In my private time with God, I ask –
Am I really the one you want to do this work?
Are you sure I’m the right person to lead this tribe of women?
I’m not perfect.
I’m not flawless.
I’m definitely not normal.
But…I want to be used for good.
I want to make a difference.
I want my words to inspire others.
I want my heart to speak to the world.
And I don’t want to die with my music still inside of me.
When I was younger, my grandfather used to joke:
You may be a little girl but you have a lot to say!
I’ve always had strong opinions.
I’ve always wanted to help people see what I saw.
That even after being lied to, abused, rejected and misunderstood….
You can still RISE.
You can still become the woman you were meant to be.
And faith is knowing that there is NOTHING too big for God.
Which means that there is nothing too big for YOU.
P.S. If you have dreams that you’ve been afraid to share with your current circle of friends because they just wouldn’t “get it” – I’ve created a safe space where you can belong.
A soft place for you to land, despite the struggle and overwhelm you may be facing right now as you strive to walk in your purpose and do the work to create your ideal life.
A community where we don’t judge you or tell you that your goals should be more “realistic.”
A tribe that truly affirms your brilliance and courage to do what it takes to live the life you really want, regardless of what other people may think.
