How many times in your life – this year even – have you felt the urge, the pull, the tap tap tap on your shoulder to do something MORE with your life?
That big goal pops into your head again and fills you with excitement.
That big idea resurfaces and you start to reminisce on what it was like to be a creative little Black girl back in the day.
That big vision comes to you in a dream for the 3rd night in a row and it feels so real, that you’re actually a little disoriented when you wake up.
But what do you do?
The same thing you always do.
Push it to the side.
Put it on the back burner.
Vow to work on it when you have more time.
Promise to come back to it later.
Yet somehow, later never comes.
Instead, you spend your time on more “practical” matters.
You throw yourself even deeper into the job, the distractions and the taking care of everyone else.
You get so busy being “realistic” that those big dreams end up being buried forever.
But every year, you get a glimpse of them.
They come back to visit you for just a moment, in a flash of inspiration while reading a book, watching a movie, listening to a podcast or even scrolling on social media.
And for a split second, you see the possibility of actually living the life you’ve always wanted.
You start to wonder – is it my time now? Is it finally my turn to start LIVING my life instead of just watching everyone else live theirs?
But then it’s like the record skips and your daydreaming comes to a screeching halt.
The lizard brain comes in with all the reasons why you CAN’T and explains that right now is NOT THE TIME and reminds you that even if you were ready, that you wouldn’t even know where to START.
And again, you believe the lies about why you don’t get to have what you want.
You try to forget about all the things you put on your vision board.
You try to act like you’re OK with not fulfilling your purpose.
You try to ignore the fact that you ever had dreams at all.
On the outside, everything seems OK.
You still make sure you look good. You still put a smile on your face.
But on the inside, you feel like you let yourself down AGAIN.
Another year gone by with so little to show for it, when you know you could have done so much more.
You feel embarrassed as you write down THE SAME GOALS FOR 2019 THAT YOU DIDN’T ACHIEVE IN 2018. OR 2017. OR 2016.
And you even question whether you’ll ever be half as successful as all the women you admire from afar.
Here’s the truth:
Those women you look up to?
The ones who keep crushing their goals, year after year?
They were called, too.
Just like you.
The only difference is that they chose to answer the call.
They chose to do the work even when it was hard.
They chose to take the leap into the unknown.
And guess what?
You get to do the same thing.
