“When you arise in the morning, think of what a precious privilege it is to be alive – to breathe, to think, to enjoy, to love.” – Marcus Aurelius
You may have heard of how a morning routine can help you be more productive and focused in your life and business. However, you may not be completely clear on what a morning routine is and how to go about creating one that works for you.
A morning routine is literally a ROUTINE. It doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. It should actually be SIMPLE so that you can implement it consistently every day.
I have had a morning routine for many years, and it has helped me to achieve so many goals in my life and business. As an entrepreneur, there are always so many ideas running through my head that I NEED to sit down and get focused so that I can go through each day without feeling scattered and all over the place.
There are a lot of different things you can do to start your day off right, so today I’d like to share a few guidelines for creating your own routine. Here’s a video on how to get started.
Wake Up Early
I recommend that you wake up early (whatever early is for you – for me, that’s 6am) and take the first hour of every day to yourself. You can’t just try to “squeeze in” your routine with everything else that you do in the morning, so you may have to wake up at least an hour earlier. Which probably means you have to GO TO SLEEP earlier.
When you go to bed at a decent time, it becomes so much easier to wake up early so you’re not rushing. You get to actually enjoy your morning routine! That means that if you usually get up at 7, wake up at 6, and take that first hour for yourself. Don’t wake up at 6 and then get started doing stuff for other people. Truly take that first hour for you. If you can commit to that, then you will have all the time you need to complete your daily morning routine.
Meditate or Pray
I recommend that you spend at least five to 10 minutes in meditation and/or prayer in the morning. Meditation is not a complicated thing that you have to read 10 books about. I just like to sit on my meditation cushion, light a candle, and just really be quiet and still so I can hear the voice of God, Spirit, Universe, whatever you want to call that higher power. Of course, you can do prayer as well, if that is something that supports you and your spirituality.
It doesn’t matter if you woke up stressed or you’re feeling overwhelmed with the things you need to get done. If you can just force yourself to sit down for 5 or 10 minutes and meditate, you will have a sense of calm as you go into your day.
After you have meditated/prayed, you can go to your journal with affirmation. NEVER go to your journal and write about all the negative things that are going on in your life, or all the things that you’re worried about, or all the things that you’re stressed out about. That is NOT what your journal is for. The way I recommend you use your journal is to affirm all the amazing things that you want to happen in your life.
When you do this type of journaling, the first two words that you write will be, “I AM.” And then you just write out what is true for you and what is becoming true for you. So I might write, “I am living my ideal life. I am living in a beautiful home in my favorite city. I am a successful business owner.”
Write out those affirmations in your journal as if they are already true, even if they haven’t yet manifested. Remember, you are writing out what you DO want in your journal, not what you DON’T want! This exercise will put you in a positive mindset for the day instead of replaying all the negativity that might be lurking in your mind.
Write Your To-Do List
After I do my journaling, I feel so good, I feel so affirmed, and now I can sit down and write down my to-do list. I use the “index card method” where I literally write out my to-do list on an index card and keep it in front of me all day.
Whether you’re an entrepreneur or a busy professional, you can get overwhelmed with all the things that need to happen. So putting all your tasks on a single index card will help keep you focused on the most important items you need to complete. When you can do that, then you will always be focused on the RIGHT things in your life and in your business.
Once you incorporate these tasks, you will be able to move forward into your day. You will not have to rush. You will not have to stress, and you will not have to worry because you have done all the work that’s necessary to set yourself up for success for the day. You will be able to truly begin your day with power and intention!
