But this wasn’t always my reality.

My “Is This It?” Moment
Back in 2007, I found myself at a crossroads with my life and career. I got my Master’s Degree in Organizational Management and was working at a nonprofit organization in Washington, DC, making a pretty good salary and even receiving awards for my work.
I liked my job, but I was feeling burned out and wondering if I was living up to my full potential. I didn’t know exactly what I wanted, but I knew I wanted something different.
I kept wondering, ”Is this it?”
And after about a year of going through what felt like an existential crisis, I decided that enough was enough!
From Burnout to Balance
I went on a journey of self-discovery to find my purpose, figure out what made me happy and decide what I wanted to do next.
One day, I sat down with a marker and a stack of index cards and got brutally honest with myself about where I was in every area of my life. Then, I gave myself permission to dream and create a vision for where I really wanted to be.
These exercises opened my eyes to how unfulfilled I was at that point in my life. So, I started making some changes! I began carving out more “me” time, exploring my hobbies, traveling to new places and spending more time with my family.
Advancing My Career &
Starting My Own Business
Little did I know, my self-discovery journey would lead me to the exciting world of personal branding and entrepreneurship!
I began to advance my career through writing, networking and speaking. I started a blog and published a book! And I even started my own business “on the side” while I worked my full-time job, offering my services as a nonprofit consultant, speaker and coach.
I quickly realized that I could monetize the same skills I was using at my job and get paid to do what I loved!

Quitting My Job & Traveling the World
2 years after I started my business, I replaced my 9 to 5 salary and I decided to quit my job.
As you can imagine, I was afraid to take the risk to go out on my own.
But I took the leap anyway because my faith outweighed my fear.
Deep down, I knew I wasn’t meant to work for someone else and I wanted to experience the freedom of being self-employed.
More specifically, I wanted to see the world. I wanted to experience all the places I had only seen on TV and in magazines!
So, I embarked on my first month-long trip abroad with nothing but my laptop and a backpack.
I went on my dream trip to Europe and over the course of an entire month, I visited Greece, Italy and Spain – the top 3 countries on my “travel bucket list.”
I indulged in the incredible food, culture and sights of each country.
It was one of the best experiences of my life.
And I wouldn’t have been able to do it without the freedom, flexibility and financial reward of being self-employed.
To be honest, after that trip to Europe…I was HOOKED.
My big dream was to be “location-independent” and not be tied down to one place. So I got rid of all my stuff and began traveling with just a suitcase and a laptop.
For over 4 years, I was a digital nomad, living and working from my “bucket list” destinations around the globe.
Since then, my wanderlust has taken me to Thailand, Mexico, Argentina, Jamaica, Hawaii, France, United Kingdom, Morocco, Portugal, Dubai, British Virgin Islands, Indonesia, The Netherlands and more!
How I Became “The Happy Black Woman”
Along the way, I created another blog called “The Diary of a Happy Black Woman” to document everything I was doing to transform my life.
As I began to write articles about my journey, I discovered that there were thousands of Black women just like me who wanted MORE out of their lives and careers.
Within a few years, the blog became much more than a website. It grew into a community of like-minded women and I started hosting events to bring this incredible tribe together.
Building a 6-Figure Business & a Life I Love
By 2013, what started out as “just a blog” had evolved into a popular women’s empowerment brand and supportive community of hundreds of like-minded Black women with big visions for our lives.
This was the year I made the decision to shut down my nonprofit consulting business and focus on Happy Black Woman full-time.
Despite many naysayers telling me it was a bad idea to target my business specifically to Black women…
In 2014, I had my first 6-figure year with Happy Black Woman!
Fast forward to today and the Happy Black Woman brand has generated over $6 million in revenue.
More importantly, my work has inspired, educated and empowered Black women all over the world! I’ve worked with hundreds of amazing clients, published two books, grew my podcast to over 1 million downloads and spoken on stage at more than 200 events.
Top media outlets like Essence, Black Enterprise, Entrepreneur and Forbes have featured my work. I’ve been able to visit places I had only seen in magazines, pay off $60,000 in student loans, purchase my first home and a luxury car in cash…and even find love again after divorce.
But what I’m most grateful for is that I’ve been able to create something that’s so much bigger than me…a life of purpose.
And I’m so honored to be able to help you do the same.
