31 Days to Reset Your Life: My Personal Mantra and Theme Song for 2015

31Day Reset Image for Sales Page

Every year in December, I go through a personal reflection and planning process that I call “31 Days to Reset Your Life.”

I take this time during the last month of the year to pause and press the “reset” button. This is when I give myself the space to journal about what my life looks like right now and get clear on what I want the coming year to look like.

If you’d like to do the program with me and dozens of amazing women in our Happy Black Woman community, click here to get instant access. You will be able to download the program materials, join our private Facebook group and get the recording of the powerful kickoff call we had on December 1.

For today, I just wanted to share my own responses to the Day 1 exercise to inspire you in your own year-end reflection process.

Have You Given Up on Your Business?

I’ve seen it far too many times…

You get one negative comment on your blog. So you just stop blogging.

You can’t seem to get more than 53 people to “like” your Facebook page. So you decide to shut it down and go on a “social media sabbatical.”

You plan a big launch, but not one person signs up for your online course. So you decide no one wants to learn from you and never offer an online course again.

You spend all day writing the perfect article for your newsletter, but when you send it out you get 5 unsubscribes. So you stop sending out newsletters.

You can’t seem to figure out Mailchimp, so you decide to stop trying to build your email list.

You conduct 10 free strategy sessions but no one buys your coaching program. So you stop offering it..

You see other people in your industry making money every day, but you still have yet to land that first paying client. So you decide maybe you’re just not “cut out” for entrepreneurship.

Any of these scenarios sound familiar?

How to Have a Good Day, Every Day

One of many colorful murals in San Miguel

One thing I love about San Miguel de Allende is how everyone walks everywhere. I leave my Airbnb apartment at about 10am this morning with two main objectives: 1) to find the cute little coffee shop I’d seen during my wandering over the weekend and 2) to pick up my ticket for the jazz festival(!) this weekend.

It’s a cool morning, about 65 degrees, but the sun is rising to warm the day. I hear dogs barking as I walk up Jose Maria de Arevalo, passing the street market and deli, a tortilleria and the panaderia on the corner that makes the best apple-cinnamon muffins for just 8 pesos or about 60 cents each.

The sidewalks here are very narrow, so you’re either squeezing past a bunch of people or stepping down to walk on the cobblestones, large and uneven under your feet. I step up and down, up and down, dozens of times.

The calles are still wet from being cleaned by various shopkeepers and residents. There is very little litter here.

I walk down Avenida de Guadalupe and up Insurgentes, past several florerias lined with colorful bouquets and carnicerias with their cases of beef and chicken and ham.

I walk across Canal, the buildings bright yellow with the sun, cobblestones turning copper in the light. People look up as they pass by with a polite “hola” or “buenos dias,” walking dogs, carrying children, running errands for the day.

Be Who You Really Are: Happy Black Woman Goes to Mexico!

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment.” – Ralph Waldo Emerson

A year ago, I made the leap to live in one of my ideal locations by moving to Honolulu, Hawaii. I was feeling excited and nervous about the direction my life was going to take. I had no idea how long I was going to stay, but I got lucky and found a great place I could rent from month-to-month so that I could leave whenever I wanted.

Since then, I’ve grown so much personally and professionally.

But most of all…

I’ve learned how incredibly important it is to be who I really am.

If I Knew Then What I Know Now: Fear vs. Legacy

“Entrepreneurship is living a few years of your life like most people won’t, so that you can spend the rest of your life like most people can’t.” — Unknown

I’m writing this post from my hotel room in San Diego, California where I’ve been for the past few days for an awesome training and networking event with my business mentor, Lisa Sasevich. I’m a lifelong learner and strongly believe in surrounding yourself with people who have already “made it” to where you want to be in life!

It was such an honor to share the stage with my mentor and peers to tell my authentic story of not only what I’ve been able to accomplish in my business, but why teaching women how to live lives of happiness, success and freedom is so important to me.

Are You Waiting for Permission to Live the Life You Really Want?

Stop waiting for permission

When I was growing up, there were two messages that were pretty strong in my family.

1. Finish school and go to college.

2. Get a good job.

My mom was raising me and my little sister on her own and we didn’t have a whole lot of money. But what my family DID have was high expectations for me.

And I worked very hard to not only meet, but exceed them.

I did finish school and go to college.

Then, I went on to grad school.

Then, I went on to build a great career in my field.

As I got older, however, many of my goals drifted away from the original vision that my family had for me.

How to Make the Right Decision, Every Single Time

Life Mapping workshop at the Happy Black Woman Hawaii Retreat!

“If what you are doing is not moving you towards your goals, then it’s moving you away from your goals.” – Brian Tracy

We had a great time at our Happy Black Woman Hawaii Retreat! It was a week full of learning, connection and FUN!

One of our wonderful attendees summed it up so beautifully in her blog post reflecting on the week-long experience:

“It all starts with a mindset. We have to be ready to receive. We have to stop limiting ourselves. There were two televisions in my suite and not once did one of them get turned on. I got so much work done in Hawaii because I was completely focused and I will keep that going while I’m here. I worked on my business and was able to have a fantastic time on the island. Good food, drinks, friendships, atmosphere … it was everything.”

One of the themes of our Hawaii retreat was the importance of getting clarity on what you really want and making decisions that support those goals. As bizarre as it sounds, we often make decisions that lead us in the complete OPPOSITE direction of our ideal lives!
