Why You Should Always Take a Chance on Yourself

file5901256161591I fell in love with Gregory Porter sometime last year. His music is jazzy, original and real. One of my favorite songs of his is called, “But Beautiful.” (Here is a link to Gregory’s live performance of the song in Germany.)

This line hit home for me:

Love is tearful or it’s gay. It’s a problem or it’s play. It’s a heartache either way…

Over the last five years, I’ve built two different businesses, lived in a dozen different cities and experienced several different romantic relationships. Although I’ve enjoyed the feelings of happiness, success and freedom through my lifestyle, I’ve also had my share of loneliness, failure, doubt, confusion, disappointment and heartbreak along the way.

How to Push Past Your Limits

I’ve been easing into the habit of running 3 times a week in preparation for a 5K race this summer (fingers crossed). I have to say, yesterday’s training run was so much easier on the treadmill with hype music and a great ocean view! It was the first time in YEARS that I jogged a whole mile without stopping to walk.

I’ve been here in Hawaii for almost 9 months(!) now and every few weeks, I still pinch myself because I can’t believe I get to live my ideal island lifestyle. I often think back to the moment when I made the decision to come here, more specifically the day I actually bought my one-way ticket from Washington, DC to Honolulu. Man..that was both a scary and exciting day!

You’re Never “Too Old” to Follow Your Dreams

10350444_879904748702159_4508953826926823982_n

A few months ago, I called my bank to change my address for one of my checking accounts.

When I told the call center operator that I had recently moved to Hawaii, she gasped and said, “Oh my God, I’ve always wanted to live there!”

I’ve gotten used to people saying things like that when I tell them I live on a tropical island, so I just kept going with the process of completing my transaction.

Or at least, I tried to.

5 Lessons I Learned About Success While Hiking Koko Head in Hawaii

2014-07-13 07.31.40

Yesterday, I hiked Koko Head Crater here in Honolulu, Hawaii with my boyfriend and some of his friends. Koko Head is one of the more challenging hikes on Oahu because it’s a really steep climb up about 1,000 steps on an old railroad path.

I don’t particularly enjoy hiking (or any form of exercise for that matter), but I have been wanting to go on at least one hike here on the island to see the amazing ocean views from the top.

Since I’m not a regular hiker, it was especially tough for me and totally outside of my comfort zone. But of course, with any new experience, you can learn some valuable lessons about life. Here are just a few that came up for me after this crazy hike!

How to Get What You Really Want

Ask for what you want

I’ve been thinking a lot about desire over the past few weeks. There’s a magical process that begins when you finally admit that you want something MORE for your life.

When you write your desires down on paper and even better – say them out loud - there’s a spiritual shift within you. Because as soon as you take the first step toward the life you really want, the universe starts moving on your behalf.

God starts placing new people and new opportunities in your life.

Miracles start happening.

At the end of last year, I set this powerful intention for 2014:

“Procrastination is the opposite of decision.” – Napoleon Hill

Let me ask you a serious question.

In the past 12 months, how many opportunities have you missed out on because of procrastination?

Be honest.

How to Reach Your Big Goals…Faster Than You Ever Thought Possible

I saw this comment today from one of our event attendees on Facebook and just had to share it with you…

“Omg since I came to the Happy Black Woman Conference I’ve been doing so well!!! I got business cards made, my braid business is booming!!! I couldn’t have been more inspired to go after my goals.” – Krystal M.

Krystal is one of many women in our Happy Black Woman community who are making progress on their goals through our live events, coaching programs and online courses.

Our tribe is FULL of amazing women who are stepping up in their lives and REFUSE to let anything or anyone hold them back from reaching their goals. They are determined to invest in themselves and get the information, motivation, support and accountability they need to move forward.

If you’ve been to any of our events or taken any of our courses, then you know exactly what I mean…

When you have BIG goals for your life and business, you have to GET CONNECTED to a supportive network of positive, like-minded women to help you reach them.

By surrounding yourself with other people who are on the path to happiness, success and freedom, you’re less likely to get dragged down and discouraged by all the naysayers in your life.

Even this blog is just a snapshot of the inspiration we share with each other on a regular basis.

Today, I invite you to make the decision to deepen your connection with us and experience the magic for yourself by attending one of our upcoming events or participating in one of our programs.

I hope to see you online or in person very soon :) I can’t wait to help you reach your big goals…faster than you ever thought possible!

Stop Saying No to Yourself

The day you become free“You achieve much once you stop telling yourself you can’t do things.” — Elizabeth Kadetsky

Whenever you give an excuse for why you “can’t” do something that you want to do, you are denying yourself an opportunity to improve your life.

You are, without a doubt, delaying your happiness.

It’s not all in your mind, though. Your behavior may actually be deeply rooted in how you were raised.

How to Find Your Purpose

If you had met me back in 2007, you would have encountered a relatively successful young woman living in Washington, DC. I had been placed in a senior management position at a regional nonprofit in the city. I loved my job, but behind the professional facade, I still felt unsure about what I was really supposed to be doing with my life.

After months of being confused about my next steps, I stumbled upon a powerful tool from Stephen Covey (author of the bestselling book, 7 Habits of Highly Effective People) that would change the course of my life. Immediately after I applied this concept, I started getting serious about figuring out WHY I was born, WHAT I was put here on earth to do and HOW I could go about doing it.

The Shocking Truth About Work-Life Balance

worklifebalance

Looking at the hundreds of messages that come through my inbox each week, it would be easy for me to say that I need more “work-life balance.” But the real solution to not being so “busy” (surprisingly) is NOT better “time management.”

The answer is not finding more time to do it ALL. The secret, if there is one, is to start making more conscious choices that are in greater alignment with your values.
